John Alfred Derby Barnett was born in Birmingham on 7 December 1887, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Fort William, Ontario, on 23 October 1914. Posted to the 28th North-West Battalion, he served with the Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front, and was wounded by gun shot at St. Eloi on 28 May 1916. The medical report states that ‘While on duty was shot by a sniper, the bullet entering the right eye and passing out through the left eye completely destroying both eyes, which were later enucleated. Commissioned Lieutenant on 12 June 1916, he subsequently lectured on sniping in which, his service record notes, ‘he is an authority’. He relinquished his commission on account of his blindness on 30 June 1918, and was granted the honorary rank of Captain. He died on 9 November 1970.
Edmond Paul Henry Gaudin was born in Malvern, Worcestershire on 6 March 1892, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Winnipeg, Manitoba, on 12 November 1915. He served with both the 90th and 27th Battalions, Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front.
Francis Peter Hutchinson was born in Thirsk, Yorkshire, on 27 February 1891, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Fort William, Ontario, on 23 October 1914. Posted to the 28th North-West Battalion, he served with the Canadian Infantry during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 September 1915, and was killed in action on 6 June 1916. He has no known grave, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

Sumaili was called up as a Reservist for the King’s African Rifles for service during the Great War. As most reservists had seen service around the turn of the century, it is possible that BR 27 Private Sumaili was the same man as 69 Sergeant Sumaili, who served during the operations in Central Africa in 1894-98, and was present at Matapwiri, September 1895; Zarafi, October 1895; Maponda, November 1895; Makanjira, November 1895; Mlozi, December 1895; Chilwa, August 1897; Mepezeni, January-February 1898 and Southern Angoniland, April 1898 (received the Central Africa Medal 1891-98 with clasp Central Africa 1894-98). He subsequently served in "D" (Atonga) Company, British Central Africa Rifles, and was present during the operations in British Central Africa 1899 -1900 and in Nandi 1905-06 (received the Africa General Service Medal 1902-56 with clasps B.C.A. 1899-1900 and Nandi 1905-06). Advanced Sergeant Major, he was discharged on the reduction of the 1st King’s African Rifles in 1911.
Sergeant Sumaili’s Central Africa and Africa General Service Medals sold in these rooms in 2003. Olabi Ijesha served with the Gold Coast Regiment during the Great War in Cameroon from 25 February 1915.

M.I.D. London Gazette 6 July 1917: Ibrahim Effendi Kadri, 2nd Lt (Mulazim Tani), Egyptian Government Official (Ministry of Agriculture) ‘For gallant or distinguished conduct in the field, or for other valuable services, during the period 1 October 1916 to 28 February 1917’.
Ibrahim Effendi Kadri was educated at the Cairo Veterinary College and served with the Veterinary Corps, Egyptian Army, during the Great War, attached to the Camel Transport Corps. Six companies, each with 2030 camels, were formed for immediate service between December 1915 and March 1916, and the veterinary personnel attached to each company was one Egyptian Officer and 25 Teremegis (Bedouin camel men engaged and trained as veterinary dressers). Mentioned in Despatches by General Murray, Commander-In-Chief, Egyptian Expeditionary Force, Kadri was given the honorific ‘Effendi’ and advanced to the rank of Mulazim Awal (First Lieutenant).

Walter Thomas Forrest Holland was born at Worcester on 1 June 1893, son of Walter Holland, J.P. He was educated at Eton and received his first commission as a Second Lieutenant, 21st Lancers, on 4 September 1912, becoming Lieutenant on 9 July 1914. Issued with Royal Aero Certificate No. 1408, Beatty School, Hendon, 5 July 1915. He was wounded at Armentieres, France, when flying with No. 100 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps, on 27 July 1917: ‘Later in the evening around 2230 Captain W. T. F. Holland from 100 Squadron R.F.C. was attempting to bomb an enemy aerodrome in his BE2e A1872 when he was hit by anti-aircraft fire. He struggled back home and wrecked the craft on landing wounding himself in the process.’
In 1923 he married Ada Maree Howard Martin, widow of Brigadier-General C. T. Martin, D.S.O., H.L.I. See Lot 15 for Brigadier- General Martin’s medals.
