John Pitts was born at Alton, Hampshire, in 1838, and enlisted into the 48th Foot at Parkhurst, Isle of Wight, on 8 November 1855, aged 17 years 7 months. He transferred as a volunteer to the 90th Light Infantry on 1 March 1857, and the following month embarked for service in China. En-route, however, the regiment was diverted to India and took part in the operations against Lucknow as part of Havelock’s First Relief Force, and at the capture of Lucknow on 21 March 1858. William Pitts died on ‘Line of March’ on 5 May 1858.

Henry Watson was born in London and enlisted there into the 99th Foot on 27 October 1856, aged 23, a labourer by trade. He served in India from December 1858 until February 1859 when he sailed with the regiment for North China.


He was part of a detachment of just 8 men of the 99th, under Captain Dunne, who were present at the capture of the Taku Forts on 21 August 1860, after which he proceeded with the regiment to Pekin. The 99th remained in China until March 1865, when they sailed for Natal, South Africa, and in December 1866 returned to England. Henry Watson was discharged ‘Free’ at the Regimental Depot, Preston, on 6 February 1867.

Benjamin Emmett was born at Spotland, Rochdale, Lancashire, in 1841 and attested for a period of ten years service in the 47th Foot at Rochdale on 17 December 1862, aged 21 years 11 months. He served in Canada from 3 September 1864 to 8 January 1869, taking part in the suppression of the Fenian uprising in May and June 1866. After service in Canada, he went with his regiment to the West Indies and whilst stationed at Bridgetown, Barbados, he re-engaged to complete twenty-one years service on 18 August 1869. He transferred to the 72nd Highlanders on 14 July 1870, and served with them in the East Indies, 1871-82, and in Egypt in 1882.


He returned Home on 2 November 1882, where he remained until discharged from the army at Parkhurst on 8 January 1884. For his services with the 72nd Highlanders, Emmett received the Afghanistan medal with clasps for Charasia, Kabul and Kandahar, the Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880, the Egypt medal for Tel-el-Kebir, and the Khedive's Star.
