Horace Charles Sloper attested for the Yorkshire Hussars and served with them during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 April 1915. Commissioned temporary Second Lieutenant, 3rd Reserve Regiment of Cavalry, on 8 July 1917, he transferred to the Indian Army on 2 January 1918. Promoted Lieutenant on 8 April 1919, he served with the 2-9th Jat Regiment during operations in Waziristan 1921-24, before transferring to the West Yorkshire Regiment (Supplementary Reserve) on 3 January 1925. He joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve as a Sub-Lieutenant on 11 October 1943, and was posted to H.M.S. Monster, a combined operations base at Fortrose, Scotland. Promoted Lieutenant on 26 October 1943, he was released from Naval Service on 12 September 1945.

John Alfred Burgess was born in Leicester on 22 November 1889, and attested there for the Royal Marine Light Infantry on 10 April 1907. Promoted Corporal on 13 February 1913, he served during the Great War with the Portsmouth Division, and was promoted Sergeant on 14 December 1916. He was further promoted to Colour Sergeant on 1 October 1922, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 17 June 1923. He was discharged on 21 November 1928, and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve the following day. He saw further service during the Second World War, with the Portsmouth Division from 4 November 1939, until his release to Class ‘A’ Reserve on 17 August 1945.

Walter Frederick Todd was a native of Glasgow, and he served as a Sergeant with the 7th (Blythswood) Battalion, Highland Light Infantry (T.F.) prior to the Great War. Todd was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the same battalion, 1 May 1915, and initially served during the Great War in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 3 July 1915. He subsequently advanced to Captain and transferred to the 2nd Battalion, before finally transferring to the Scottish Rifles.
