Walter Cecil Woodhouse was born in Norwich on 21 October 1899, and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve for the duration of hostilities on 13 November 1917. He served as an Ordinary Seaman in H.M.S. Pembroke and Gibraltar, and was shore demobilised on 3 June 1919.


William Loveridge was born in Esher, Surrey, and attested for the Queen’s (Royal West Surrey) Regiment at Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. He served with the 6th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front, and was killed in action on 23 July 1918. He is buried in Cabaret-Rouge British Cemetery, Souchez, France.


Richard Henry Baker was born in Quebec, Canada, on 29 August 1897, and attested for the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force at Quebec on 7 November 1917. Posted to the 28th Battalion, Canadian Infantry, he served during the Great War on the Western Front from 10 May 1918, and was admitted to 54th General Hospital, France, on 8 September 1918, having been gassed. Recovering, he was subsequently admitted to the 3rd Canadian General Hospital, France, on 21 November 1918, suffering this time from influenza and bronchitis. He was discharged at Quebec on 15 February 1919.


Izat Beig, of Kartar Bhagwan, Amritsar, Punjab, served during the Great War as a Follower in the Indian Railway Department, and died in Mesopotamia on 7 December 1918. He is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq.

John Bernard Davies was educated at Jesus College, Cambridge, and was ordained Deacon in 1901 and Priest in 1902. He served as Curate of St. Clement’s, York, 1901-08, and of Pontefract, 1908-12, and as Vicar of St. Peter’s Anlaby, Yorkshire, from 1912. He was appointed Temporary Chaplain to the Forces in 1918, relinquishing his commission with the honorary rank of Chaplain to the Forces in 1919.

Norman Alexander Doggart was born at Kirkcaldy, Fife, and was educated at Edinburgh University. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) on 23 September 1914, and served with them during the Great War, before transferring to the Royal Air Force. He was killed on 10 October 1918, whilst serving at 33rd Training Depot Station, and is buried in Botley Cemetery, Oxford.

K.A.R. D.C.M. Nyasaland Gazette 30 March 1918. ‘659 L/Cpl. Allan (note different spelling), 2/1 K.A.R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry in action at Lukulezi, Portuguese East Africa on 28th January 1918. Lance-Corporal Allan was one of a patrol returning to camp with a wounded man. The patrol was attacked, two more men being wounded. In getting out these two men, the original wounded man was left behind. Lance-Corporal Allan returned under fire from about 80 yards and carried the wounded man about a quarter of a mile and hid him. He then followed the patrol into camp, returned with a hammock and brought him in’.


Allon enlisted in the 1st Battalion, King’s African Rifles, on 2 December 1913 at Angoni, and served with “F” Company in Nyasaland during the Great War, being awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his gallantry in Portuguese East Africa. He was promoted Corporal on 11 October 1918, and was discharged on the reduction of the establishment on 31 March 1919.

Sher Mohammed served during the Great War as a Havildar Salutri (Veterinary Sergeant) in the Mountain Battery Hong Kong and Singapore Royal Garrison Artillery, which formed part of the Imperial Camel Corps, in the Egyptian theatre of War from 29 November 1915. For his gallantry and distinguished service during the 2nd Battle of Gaza he was Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazette 16 January 1918.

John Edward Bruntlett was born in Skegness, Lincolnshire, and was employed as a clerk on the North Eastern Railway. He attested for the Royal Field Artillery at Hexham, Northumberland, and served with them during the Great War, before transferring to the 50th (Northumberland) Signal Company, Royal Engineers. He was dangerously wounded in the face and eyes in action on the Western Front on 12 September 1917. Repatriated to England, he died of his wounds in St. George’s Hospital, London, on Christmas Day 1917, and is buried in Stanley New Cemetery, Co. Durham. He is also commemorated on the Memorial at St. Aidan’s United Reformed Church in Hencotes.

John Cleaver Bishop, a native of Kidderminster, Worcestershire, was born in Wolverhampton in 1886 and attested for the Worcestershire Regiment at Kidderminster on 8 March 1916. He served with the 1st/8th Battalion during the Great War on the Western Front from June 1916, and was killed in action on 24 April 1917. He is buried in Villers-Faucon Communal Cemetery Extension, Somme, France.
