SINGLE CAMPAIGN MEDALS 399 ABYSSINIA 1867 (490 J. Smith 33rd D.W. Regt.) light contact marks, otherwise very fine £260-300

John Smith was born in Bermondsey, London, and enlisted into the 33rd Foot at Finsbury on 23 March 1858, aged 24, a labourer by trade. He joined the 1st Battalion in India in November 1861, remaining there until transferred to Abyssinia in March 1868, as part of the expeditionary force being assembled under the command of Sir Robert Napier. In the ensuing campaign the 33rd had 2 killed and 27 wounded, and two soldiers were awarded the Victoria Cross.

Smith returned to England in June 1868, and thereafter served at various stations in England and Ireland before returning to India in late 1875. Most of his second period of India was spent in hospital, and he was eventually recommended for discharge by a Regimental Board at Kamtee on 24 March 1879, as being unfit for further service. He returned to England where his final discharge was formally approved at the Royal Hospital, Netley, on 23 June 1879.

John Mahon was born at Knockmore, Ireland, and enlisted into the 2nd Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, at Belfast on 14 December 1870, aged 19, a clerk by trade. He was posted to the Gold Coast, West Africa, in late 1873 and arrived at Cape Coast Castle on 10 December. The battalion was heavily involved in the fighting at Amoaful and Ordahsu, and provided the advance guard of Wolseley’s approach to Coomassie. Wolseley’s despatch from Coomassie, dated 5 February 1874, records John Mahon as having received a very severe gunshot wound to his head at Ordahsu on 4 February, from which wounds he died at Cape Coast Castle on 20 February 1874.

SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79, 1 clasp, 1877-8-9 (1011. Pte. D. Griffith. 2-24th Foot.) nearly extremely fine

£800-1000

David Griffith/Griffiths was born in the Parish of Llanelly, near Brynmawr, Brecknockshire, in 1850. He attested for a term of twelve years with the 25th Brigade at Brynmawr on 29 December 1876, aged 26, a fireman by trade. Shortly afterwards he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, 24th Foot and went with the Battalion to South Africa in February 1878, arriving at the Cape of Good Hope the following month.

It seems probable that Griffiths was part of Lord Chelmsford’s column that moved out of Isandhlwana on 22 January as he is recorded in the 2nd Battalion Orders Book (Rorke’s Drift, January-April 1879) as having transferred from ‘E’ to ‘G’ Company at Rorke’s Drift on 31 January 1879; ‘E’ Company had formed part of Chelmsford’s column on 22 January.

Griffiths departed South Africa on 27 January 1880, and after further service in Gibraltar and India, returned home on 27 January 1883. He was transferred to the Army Reserve on 28 March 1883 and finally discharged at Brecon on 25 January 1889.
