NORTHAMPTON BOROUGH COUNCIL

More than 500 students and teachers attended Northampton Borough Council’s Safer Internet Day event in February. The event at The Deco Theatre aimed to help keep pupils safe online

by raising awareness of the dangers of online exploitation and grooming. The students, aged nine to 12, and teachers from 11 county schools,

watched a performance by sixth formers called ‘Add me’ which explored the dangers of online exploitation by following the story of 11-year-old Sophie as she begins to explore the world of social media. Following this, Northamptonshire Police and Northamptonshire

County Council delivered a workshop which taught the students how to stay safe on Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook and spot threats such as online grooming and cyber bullying. It advised them how to manage the growing emotional challenges that social media presents children including self-esteem and body image issues. Cllr Anna King, cabinet member for community safety and

engagement, said: “It’s essential that we protect our children and young people by promoting the safe use of digital technologies. “We were pleased that so many schools joined us for our event, which

helped to tackle some difficult subjects as well as highlighting the reporting mechanisms we have in place. “We hope to work with partners to hold another event like this in the

future.” Detective sergeant Nickie Deeks from Northamptonshire Police

added: “We have to teach children how to protect themselves and importantly, what to do if they come across anything online which makes them feel uncomfortable or concerned. This event did just that and I was happy to support it.”
