DIGITAL GROWTH

A picture paints a thousand words

In our earlier days as a human species, we did not have text with which to communicate with one another - it was either by verbal or, in the end, by pictorial means. Indeed, some of our most

sophisticated civilisations such as the ancient Egyptians used pictures, and combinations of images, to document and depict what was happening.

Of course, alphabets were

developed, but pictures have always been a huge part of our history and, generally speaking, have helped us understand what is going on, or what the artist wants us to feel. According to research by 3M, we

process images 60,000 times faster than text. This is just as well, because life is much faster and we don’t seem to have the time to absorb all the information that is available to us. Think of your own social media feeds. Hundreds of posts from friends, family, businesses all being posted for you to scroll through. You will

never get to the end of the amount of content that is being produced. As a business using social media, your posts are competing with many others. How do you ensure that your post has an impact on your audience, causing their thumb

to scroll slower, or even stop? Decisions on whether to engage

with you and your business and ultimately buy your product may well depend on the information that you provide alongside the picture of the product itself, but a single product image on a sterile background misses the opportunity to tell a story.

ABOUT THE EXPERT

Social Media and CRM consultant Paul Ince is one of the Digital Growth Programme’s resident experts in social media. With nearly 20 years’ experience in the IT industry, he has supported many businesses to increase their visibility online and grow their business through digital technology. Paul specialises in helping organisations understand the strategies that will help them succeed with social media and, more broadly, with content marketing.

58 business network December 2017/January 2018 Instagram and Pinterest are two

very visual platforms that businesses can utilise with great effect to tell the story about the product, the world in which it lives and even the type of people who should be buying it. Creating pictures that communicate this helps the customer move through the buying journey efficiently and, if used in conjunction with certain platform functionality, can actually reduce the time to purchase. This may sound obvious for

manufactured products but this is also true for service-based businesses, where value can be added to the audience using images and videos, infographics and how-to guides. In a nutshell, there are a great deal of very effective digitally-based techniques and platforms that can greatly enhance your ability to sell – if utilised in the right way. The good news is that any

business big or small and from any number of sectors can use visual marketing in a positive way to improve their social media results and drive people towards the point of purchase. As part of the Digital Growth

Programme, we’re running a number of seminars which focus on how to achieve tangible success through a variety of methods relating to visual marketing.
