LEGAL Is your business cyber-safe?

With a growing emphasis on security and best practice in the digital world – including the legally-binding General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) which comes into force next year - Natasha Sagar, Cyber Protect Officer for Derbyshire Constabulary, outlines techniques to ensure cyber processes are robust and compliant. Cyber-crime is a growing threat in

the UK, with 48% of SMEs attacked last year. Derbyshire Constabulary provides security advice to SMEs throughout Derbyshire, delivering the advice in accordance with the

Defend, Deter, Develop, Protect and Prevent strands under the National Cyber Security Strategy. Here are a few tips on keeping your business cyber-safe:

STRONG PASSWORDS A strong password is your first line of defence against cyber criminals. It is advised that you create passwords that are made up of three random words with symbols and numbers to prevent the most experienced cyber criminal from entering your cyber domain.

ANTI-VIRUS AND SOFTWARE UPDATE Software updates contain vital security upgrades which help protect your device from viruses and cyber criminals. It is very easy to click ‘later’, but by updating your anti-virus or software you are protecting your device from malware instantaneously.

Natasha Sagar, Cyber Protect Officer for Derbyshire Constabulary

FILES BACK UP ON AN EXTERNAL DEVICE Keep a backup separate from your computer, whether on a USB stick, a separate computer drive or a separate computer.

Make sure the device containing the backup data is not connected – either physically or over a local network - to the device holding the original copy.

EMPLOYEE AWARENESS Employees need to be regularly reminded of the real and present danger of cyber crime. You could create a checklist and make sure employees know what to look out for with regards to the different types of cyber attacks and the techniques cyber criminals are using.

Part of the UK National Cyber Security Programme, The Cyber Essentials Scheme gives organisations an opportunity to be assessed by expert cyber security specialists. If your business is certified with Cyber Essentials, it demonstrates that it holds itself to a high standard of cyber security and that your business maintains a strict stance on cyber security in accordance with the UK National Cyber Security Programme.
