CHAMBER NEWS
Above and beyond the call of duty
Lots of people do fantastic things in their lives but very often they go unrecognised. Can we change things in Derbyshire? These people may, among other things, be creating and
offering employment in a local company, conducting significant voluntary work in the community, working tirelessly to safeguard the environment, achieving sporting triumphs or helping people face and overcome health problems. The aim of the Queen’s New Year and Birthday
Honours is to celebrate all these selfless types of activities. Anybody can be nominated for an Honour at any time and the process is easy to complete. All you need to do is fill out the nomination
form, gather evidence of the impact of the person’s activities and get letters of support from people who know them or have benefited from their activities. If you know someone running or working in
a local company whose efforts deserve to be recognised, why not nominate them? You might help that deserving person get the recognition they deserve and give you a sense of satisfaction too. More information is available at
www.gov.uk/honours but you can also discuss the possibilities with a member of the Derbyshire Lord Lieutenant’s Honours Panel.
The panel is always happy to help and can be contacted by emailing
debra.heaton@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or by phoning 01629 761126.
Event collaborates with women in manufacturing
In January, Collaborate and the Chamber are offering a unique opportunity to hear from successful women in business. Women who represent and work
in manufacturing often have long and successful careers, make excellent engineers, team leaders and senior managers. There is still a need, however, to attract more females into science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), with only 15% graduating in engineering and technology between 2014 and 2015, and only seven per cent becoming apprentices. On 15 January at College Court
Conference Centre, in Leicester, the Women in Manufacturing: The Midlands Manufacturing Supreme event will provide an opportunity
to hear from, among others, Jan Ward, CEO and founder of Corrotherm International. The event will also see the Chamber share its quarterly economic survey results, highlighting key influencing factors and growth areas which could prove vital to manufacturers’ business growth. Places are limited at this free
event, so book now by visiting the Chamber’s website. The Collaborate projects offers
free business support and grants from £5,000 to £25,000 to small and medium businesses in Leicester and Leicestershire trading B2B.

Awards success for inspirational Diane
Diane Beresford, the Chamber’s Deputy Chief Executive, has won the Outstanding Woman in Professional Services Award at the inaugural East Midlands Women’s Awards (EMWA). Diane began her career with
the Chamber in 1986, setting up the region’s eBusiness Club – now the Chamber’s Digital Growth arm. She left the Chamber in 2002 to set up her own company, drawing on her digital expertise. Diane returned to the Chamber
in 2012 and, in addition to her Deputy Chief Executive duties, manages an extensive portfolio across all aspects of the organisation. She said: “To say that it was a surprise to come away with the
Diane Beresford
Outstanding Woman in Professional Services Award would be an understatement. It’s always nice to be recognised for the work you do and it is an honour to receive the award, however I would like to also pay tribute to my colleagues who work tirelessly and have made it possible for me to pick up this award.”
