Builders pledge to help solve industry skills gap


Derbyshire-based Fairgrove Homes has pledged to work with its subcontractors to recruit and train more people to the highest standards, and help tackle the pressing home building skills gap. Fairgrove is among the dozens of


home builders that have signed up to the Home Building Skills Pledge, a set of five key actions developed by the Home Builders Federation (HBF) through its Home Building Skills Partnership and its members in recognition of the need to collaboratively tackle the nationwide home building skills shortage. It also recognises the importance of future proofing workforce skills – via new entry routes as well as developing existing talent. This will mean that quality homes can be built where and when they are needed. All of HBF’s larger members


have now signed up alongside an increasing number of medium and small members – meaning companies responsible for well over half the homes built in England are already committed.

areas: Collaborate and share; Train to a standard; Engage and support; Champion diversity and inclusion; Promote careers. By signing up to pledge, companies will also be supporting the HBF’s Home Building Skills Partnership and working to its shared goals.

Partnership is a pan industry body funded by CITB and set up to tackle the industry’s skills shortage. The Partnership, set up 18 months ago, is already starting to deliver on its objective of attracting and training the people the industry needs to deliver more, high quality homes in the future. In the past three months alone,


site managers and trainee site managers have been put through over 200 training courses.


Trainees set up programme shop


Enterprising young trainees at the Chesterfield FC Community Trust are offering fans the opportunity to purchase vintage Chesterfield programmes. A range of programmes are


going on sale at the Proact Stadium, together with some limited edition framed programmes. The youngsters who have


organised the project are involved in a traineeship programme, which gives outstanding opportunities and experience to 16- to 18 year- olds who are not in education, employment or training. Darren Parkinson, Education


Officer at the Chesterfield FC Community Trust, said: “The traineeship programme that we offer is designed to help young people gain relevant skills and work experience. “The vintage programme


shop project has been developed by the trainees with assistance from their tutors, in order to give them experience of setting up and running a small business.”


APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING Industrial cadets from Leicester College


Cadets get first-hand experience at Camloc


Leicester-based gas spring and damper manufacturer Camloc Motion Control has been nurturing future industry talent, thanks to a partnership with fellow Chamber member Leicester College, to offer experience to young people taking part in the nationally-recognised Industrial Cadets programme. Industrial cadets forms part of


the Prince’s Trust’s Engineering Education Trust - set up by the Prince of Wales to allow students nationwide to benefit from work experience across the skill areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).


A group of 35 engineering


students worked with Camloc for one week, learning directly from company directors Andy Hubbard and Matt Warne about Camloc’s specialist products and how they are manufactured. Gemma Jackson, Employability


and Enterprise Manager at Leicester College, said: “Camloc has been very accommodating and provided valuable mentoring to our cadets. Both Andy and Matt were great with the students. This is experience that they simply cannot gain in the classroom, and we are very grateful to Camloc.”
