T ere is a lot more that goes into ethical growing than simply planting and picking. Jan Billington, grower of edible fl owers and salad leaves at Maddocks Farm explains what it means to see the Soil Association label on your food products.


What does the Soil Association do?


T e Soil Association is the UK's leading charity, campaigning for healthy, humane and sustainable food, farming and land use. It operates in several ways:


First, it works with farmers, growers and researchers to champion practical solutions to farming in modern times. It helps lobby governments to make changes to harmful policies and help meet the challenges facing a world of increasing populations and climate change. T e Soil Association helps farmers fi nd new ways to grow better food and protect our land for future generations.


Secondly, the Soil Association champions for traceability and clarity of what we are eating so that we understand from the labels on our food what is in it and how it was produced.


T irdly, the Soil Association champions good food for all and has worked tirelessly to get healthier food into nurseries, schools, hospitals, care homes, workplaces and on the High Street.


Finally, the Soil Association manages Soil Association Certifi cation. You will be aware of certifi cation from the logo which is attached to products. T is award is not just restricted to farmers and food processors but also caterers, restaurants and the beauty industry. T e Soil Association runs and inspects this rigorous qualifi cation.

So what does this mean on a day to day level at


Maddocks Farm? "Being organic is not just about not spraying with chemicals. It is a completely holistic approach to growing and running a business. All seeds, compost and manure are from traceable organic sources. Our water comes from a borehole and is sterilised using UV fi ltration. Our business uses green packaging, solar panels, and photovoltaic cells - we take our carbon footprint very seriously. We also invest a percentage of our profi ts each year to environmental charities."
