Village News AFC ARE UP FOR THE CUP

ALVECHURCH FC celebrated its past, present and future when the FA Cup trophy paid a visit to the club, as the team prepared to play in the competition’s preliminary round (you can see how they got on on page 54). Fans, players and staff, including

chairman Richard Thorndike (above centre), were able to have their pho- tos taken with the cup, whose pres- ence was a tribute to AFC’s place in football history. The club took part in the longest-ever FA Cup fixture, an 11-hour, six-match marathon in the fourth qualifying round against

Oxford City 46 years ago in 1971/2. Former Alvechurch player Derrick

Davis (above left), who took part in five of the six fixtures, was finally able to get his hands on the trophy – along with his grandson, Harry Bromley, who is now a regular for ’Church’s under-nines.
