PHARMACIST GOES THAT EXTRA MILE….FOR CHARITY
Everyone may have started the year with great intentions, but pharmacist Johnathan Laird went that extra step…or at least, that extra five kilometres! Johnathan set himself the target of running five kilometres each day in January in a bid to raise £1750 for Pharmacist Support, the charity that provides back-up to pharmacists for a wide range of issues.
‘Being a professional in such a fast- paced, demanding world is something you can only understand when you walk in those shoes,’ said Johnathan. ‘I defy any pharmacist to deny that at one point or another throughout their career they have not felt feelings of anxiety, stress, depression or other mental health issues.
‘Pharmacist Support is the charity that NEW

provides the very important function of helping pharmacists when they are in need. They make sure that pharmacists are cared for so that in turn those pharmacists can care for patients.
‘I have never done any kind of serious running before, so this is indeed a challenge. Completing this challenge is a nod to all those pharmacists who have been in this type of difficult position at one time or another.
‘£1750 is a large, possibly unrealistic target but the size of this target represents the mountain many have to climb to escape these feelings of stress, anxiety or depression.’

NPA Patient Safety Incident Reports on near miss and errors are being received in a steady flow from NPA members across Scotland. NPA members and pharmacy staff can report in an anonymous, systematic and quick to use format via the NPA website.
Statistical analysis on the common errors for NPA members in Scotland in these three months will be provided in February. The analysis information will be a valuable learning tool for all pharmacists to improve patient safety. The range of reports received include the expected “picking” and “labelling” errors, however they also gather evidence of system errors and highlight where pharmacist intervention with the prescriber has been required to protect patient safety.
If you have not tried using the Patient Safety Incident Reporting tool - why not try a test report? Just include that it is a test within the content. Any patient or staff personal details included in the online submission other than their role type are not included in the collation or feedback.
Reporting of safety incidents is highlighted within the Safety Systems and Learning questions of the Safety Climate Survey as explained in PCA (P)(2016)15. The circular explains that all pharmacy team members in Scottish pharmacies will be required to complete the survey and that pharmacists have to complete the five Understanding Improvement modules.
The survey involves staff members answering an online survey anonymously, which asks questions on the Teamwork, Safety systems and learning, Working conditions,

Leadership and Communication, aspects of their pharmacy. When all of the pharmacy team have answered the survey a report is produced scoring against the average pharmacy. This report has to be discussed with staff and an action plan developed on how to make quality improvements. The NPA provides many resources which support Quality Improvement in the pharmacy.
The NPA also provides resources to support business efficiency including HR, health and safety and the Business Efficiency Solutions pack. This pack was designed to assist NPA members to examine their business and support protecting against financial loss. This is pertinent to all pharmacists across the UK facing tightening pressure from NHS efficiencies.
The English contract may in future be more aligned with the Scots as the recent Murray review of English Community Pharmacy Clinical Services calls for: independent prescribing to be mainstreamed, an English Minor ailments service, pharmacy smoking cessation as core contract and for more collaboration between GPs and community pharmacists.
If any member would like a hard copy of the Business Efficiency Solutions pack, support on completion of the Safety Climate Survey, facilitation of the staff discussion on the resulting report or on developing a Quality Improvement Action Plan then please contact
