REWARDING EXCELLENCE

eHEALTH AND INNOVATION IN PHARMACY PRACTICE

STEPHEN DICKSON, DICKSON CHEMIST, RUTHERGLEN

Today’s community pharmacists are burdened with paperwork. Additionally, with the new format of the post-shipman CD Registers, the space taken up by the inserts and the almost exponential increase in ‘branded generic’ CDs has meant that writing up a controlled drug can be a monumental task. To resolve this issue, Stephen and his team created www.cdregister.co.uk, which puts all the paper records online in a safe and secure way. This automated and innovative system has streamlined baseline processes and also facilitates direct feedback from patients.

JOHN DUNN, NHS TAYSIDE PHARMACY ON CALL SERVICE, NINEWELLS HOSPITAL, DUNDEE

The pharmacy on call service within NHS Tayside has undergone significant change in the recent past. One of the most important aspects of this change has been the development of the on call pharmacy app, which is now fully functional. All calls are recorded by the app and the on call service is now completely paper-free. This innovation is significant because staff have moved away from a cumbersome, paper-based system which had many drawbacks, and have implemented an electronic solution which is much more user friendly.

PATRICIA HANNAM, NORTH AND WEST OPERATIONAL UNIT, NHS HIGHLAND, DINGWALL

A remote, primary care, clinical pharmacy service has been set up in NHS Highland to overcome the inequity of access to pharmaceutical care in remote and rural areas. The service incorporates the latest developments in digital health and technology, including virtual consultation apps and remote access to GP practice systems to provide a clinical pharmacist with remote access to patients and their GP records. The outcomes from the medication reviews etc are then passed to the patient, GP, community pharmacist and relevant healthcare professionals, enabling joined-up working.
