Pharmacist

REWARDING EXCELLENCE

INDEPENDENT PRESCRIBER OF THE YEAR

BERNADETTE BROWN, CADHAM PHARMACY, GLENROTHES

Bernadette firmly believes that, with compassionate care and independent prescribing in both primary care and community pharmacy settings, pharmacists can make huge differences to quality of life outcomes. She has been particularly active in the area of medicines optimisation, working closely with the local GP practice. In addition to prescribing, Bernadette also ‘deprescribes’ and has many examples of the huge benefits that can be derived from the cognitive side effects of opioid pain medication.

ALASDAIR SHEARER, DAVIDSONS CHEMIST, MILNATHORT

Last year, Alasdair established a chronic pain clinic at Loch Leven Health Centre in Kinross, working closely with the GP partners and the practice pharmacist. Alasdair responds to direct

referrals from the GPs and also searches the records for patients whose medication is overdue a review or who don’t seem to be taking the most efficacious medication. Patient feedback has been very positive and Alasdair has found that his expertise has continued on through his community pharmacy work.

AUDREY MCANAW, MCPHERSON’S PHARMACY, BROUGHTY FERRY

Two years ago, it was identified that there was a need for community pharmacy to support Tayside Dementia services due to the increasing number of patients accessing that service. As a result, Audrey set up a community pharmacy IP clinic and currently looks after 25 patients. The clinic has enabled Audrey to react more quickly to patients’ needs, which has minimised patient distress regarding their medication and, consequently, has assisted in improving care.

MICHAEL CHURCH, ROWLANDS PHARMACY SPRINGBURN

Michael currently works in Austens two days per week and does two prescribing clinics per week. He typically sees 20-30 patients per week, with the majority living in deprived communities in the north east of Glasgow. Michael utilises his independent prescribing skills in addition to reviewing patients prescribed hypnotics and benzodiazepines. The measurable impact he has made through his combined community pharmacy role, his IP work and collaborative working both with the GPs and the prescribing support pharmacist is evidenced in patient outcomes.
