What Lies Beneath...
The annual celebration of the sea with national ‘Marine Weeks’ from 29th July-13th August is a chance for us to all refl ect about what the sea means to us. Living in Dorset means most of us are a stone’s throw away from the beautiful beach, with many of us spending our summer swimming in it, walking along it and admiring it.
For something that’s such a big part of our lives in Dorset, many of us know very little about the underwater world which lies beneath the waves. Not unlike our neighbourhoods on land, the sea has communities, families and homes which are surviving and reproducing every day; the difference is that we can’t always see this world easily, which makes it hard to understand, and appreciate.
In 2013, Dorset had three Marine Conservation Zones (MCZ’s) designated including Poole Rocks; South Dorset; and Chesil Beach & Stennis Ledges, providing protection for the species living there.
The charm and charisma of the marine wildlife which will benefi t from this protection should not be underestimated in favour of their land-based counterparts. Cuttlefi sh, for example, are intelligent masters of deception, deploying secret ‘weapons’ with the cunning of James Bond; squirting enemies in a cloud of black ink, before making their escape,

There are things we can all do to learn about marine wildlife, and also help it. A partnership project led by DWT, Southern IFCA, the NEFS, MCS, Seasearch and 7 Tenths Ecology Ltd has seen the creation of a fantastic website about Poole Rocks MCZ to depict life beneath the sea – visit

Another threat faced by marine life is marine litter which is hugely damaging to marine habitats, and wildlife that ingest it. Help by taking part in the #2minutebeachclean the next time you visit a Dorset beach.
