Councillor Update

What makes a councillor’s role interesting, challenging and satisfying is the knowledge that every week can produce a new issue and a new experience, but there will nearly always be a left- over from the previous week or month that needs to be resolved. There are also some issues that seem to go on forever; the closure of Baiter toilets is one of these. At the June council meeting not only did a resident present a petition requesting the toilets be re-opened, but the Mayor had previously agreed that an opposition motion also requesting the re-opening of the toilets could be taken as an urgent item. In fact, this motion was moved to be the beginning of the agenda to be discussed immediately following the presentation of the petition.

However, no sooner had the motion been proposed and seconded by opposition members than the Conservatives proposed an amendment – that the motion should not be discussed there and then but be directed to the next relevant Overview and Scrutiny Committee instead. This resulted in a very heated discussion witnessed by a packed public gallery. Both Vikki and Mike, along with other members of the opposition, argued for the original motion to be debated immediately otherwise it would be kicked into the long grass, which was the intention of the Conservatives’ amendment. A recorded vote was eventually held with virtually all the Conservatives voting in favour of the original motion being discussed at the next Place Overview and Scrutiny Committee meeting scheduled for 19th July. This meant the earliest the committee could report back to Full Council would be September 26th. Therefore, the toilets on Baiter will remain closed throughout the summer holiday period, and so further damage the already damaged reputation of Poole.

We know from talking with residents how much the service offered by Poole Hospital’s A&E department is valued. The outcome of the recent consultation confi rmed this through the level of responses received. A motion proposing that Poole Council should support the option which retained the A&E unit at Poole was debated at Full Council on 27th June and gained unanimous support. Vikki and Mike spoke in the debate, but presented very different reasons supporting the retention of the services in Poole. We understand the fi nal decision will be made later in the year.

Mike challenged Cabinet members at a meeting on 11th July to abandon the recent hike in car parking charges, revert to the previous pricing regime and also make Saturday parking free as

a way of supporting local traders. All Cabinet members refused to discuss the proposals apart from the Portfolio Holder, who did at least agree to meet with Mike. However, he also stated it was too early to carry out a review as he wanted to see more data! We have asked the Head of Transportation Services to provide us with car park fi gures for April-July. We have been told the data we have asked for does not exist yet. With or without data, we have requested the meeting as a matter of urgency and will continue to fi ght for residents and businesses over this issue.

Our next Saturday surgeries in Broadstone Library at 10am are on 5th August and 9th September.
