How Running Impacts Your Feet
On average, six times your body weight goes through each foot when running. In order to achieve better results you need to examine your posture. The movement in joints are fl uid and coordinated with good posture. The most effi cient running position is for the elbows to be close to the sides and the hands should not cross the midline of the chest.
Cadence is the number of foot strikes per minute. 180 foot strikes is considered to be the optimum for runners. Higher cadence allows the hip joints to move in a more fl uid way. Consider shorter stride length as it improves the fl exibility of the joints. Also, your centre of mass is better positioned over the arch of the foot rather than the heel.
Common Injuries
Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints): This is a mechanical pain caused by the mal-alignment of the lower leg. It should be addressed, so see your podiatrist for help.
Achilles Tendon Pain: An overuse injury involving tendons at the back of the leg and foot. Early treatment is RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation).
Top Tips
Trainers: Your trainers have approximately 250-500 miles of life, after which they will become stretched and lose their shock absorbency. Trainers for long distances should be half a size bigger than your normal shoe, as the feet swell with running.
Socks: Often overlooked. Whilst we recommend cotton socks for everyday wear, select specifi c running socks as they wick away moisture. Damp feet are blister prone and at risk of fungal infections.
