Broadstone Middle School, Age 9-13 This term, we were both delighted

and privileged to welcome author and Patron for Reading Joffre White into Broadstone Middle School.

A successful author of books for children and young adults, including the epic Frog series, Joffre is also a passionate motivational speaker whose love for reading in all its guises and the unifying power of literature is truly inspirational. Joffre also led two writing workshops with a selection of our Year 7 and Year 8 writers, giving them an invaluable insight into the writing process, the creative craft and to experience what it is like to work collaboratively with an established author.

The pupils brainstormed and created mind-maps of their ideas inspired by props brought in by Joffre – a technique which he employs in his own writing to help generate ideas for plot, character and setting.

A select group of pupils were invited to eat with Joffre at lunchtime in the school library and discuss his books and creations – in quite

considerable detail too! Pupils also had the opportunity to meet Joffre after school and he kindly stayed on to sign cards and new copies of his book Earthland. He also offered individual and personalised advice as to how pupils could improve their writing skills and one day become

published authors themselves.

The pupils were absolutely buzzing after their day with Joffre and were enthused by the power of his message to never give up on your dreams, no matter what anyone else might tell you. We thoroughly look forward to his next visit!
