MOD signs BSCS into service In procuring the Biological Surveillance and Collector System (BSCS), the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MOD) has recognised the evolving challenge of protecting against biological attacks and their asymmetric nature. The BSCS system can be used in both military and civil situations, and, in military applications, is designed to protect UK’s deployed forces overseas from biological attack. Developed by Thales in partnership with Dstl and DE&S, BSCS is the latest biological protection capability to be developed for UK military forces. It builds on lessons learnt from previous systems, deployed operations and prototypes. The export variant, called Spinnaker, can be used to protect civil areas such as sports stadiums, and large public spaces therefore it can be used to protect major national sporting events, critical national infrastructure, large scale public gatherings etc.

Next generation HPMS device for first responders The MX908 builds on the success of 908 Devices’ first-generation device, the M908TM. THigh pressure mass spectrometry (HPMS) enables the MX908 to provide civilian, federal and military responders with new and improved target detection and identification capabilities. This includes increased sensitivity that is up to 1,000 times greater than previous generation devices, and a new simultaneous dual-mode ionisation for even broader threat category coverage.

FLIR launches portable GC/MS FLIR Systems has launched the Griffin G510 gas chromatograph-

mass spectrometer (GC/MS), its first person-portable chemical identifier.

The FLIR Griffin G510 comes equipped with an integrated heated sample probe designed for downrange missions. When used in survey mode, it identifies vapour phase chemicals within seconds. The split/split-less injector allows for environmental, forensic, and hazardous material sampling by enabling syringe injection of organic liquids, a first for person- portable GC/MS systems.

Rapid Ebola test A test that takes only 20 minutes to reveal if a person has Ebola, will receive as much as $10.4m in federal funding from the US government, which said it could improve efforts to fight the spread of the deadly disease.

OraSure's product, the OraQuick Ebola rapid antigen test, relies on either a finger-stick blood sample or a saliva sample. In addition to use in healthcare facilities, the OraQuick Ebola test can also be performed in the field, which could greatly reduce the lag in getting results.
