against an ICBM-class target, the Missile Defence Agency announced. The painful history of ground based mid-course defence, which has cost $123bn since 2002, now stands at nine successful tests out of 18 since 1999, exactly 50%.
One million dollars A retired Russian Army colonel claimed that Russia would be able to wipe out East coast cities (presumably as well as the Canary islands and Ireland) with a tsunami bomb! He stated that Russia had been laying nuclear ‘moles’ off the Eastern seaboard that they would be able to detonate should the US continue ‘to build up its conventional forces on Russia’s borders.’ The Kremlin stated that Col. Baranetz’s claims were ‘strange… and not to be taken seriously.’
Hanford nuclear site accident puts focus on ageing US facilities The collapse of a tunnel used to store radioactive waste at one of the most contaminated US nuclear sites has raised concerns among watchdog groups, and others who study the country's nuclear facilities, because many are ageing and fraught with problems. Thankfully no radiation was released during the incident at a plutonium handling facility in the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state, but thousands of workers were ordered to take cover and some were evacuated as a precaution.
US sanctions ISIS chemical weapons experts The US has announced sanctions against two ISIS chemical weapons experts, the first such effort aimed specifically at the terrorist group's CW leadership.
The new sanctions, which would bar access to any property or interests under US jurisdiction, target Attallah Salman 'Abd Kafi al-Jaburi and Marwan Ibrahim Hussayn Tah al-Azawi, who were involved in CW development, according to the state and treasury departments.
Anything you can claim, I can claim harder Kim Jong Un vowed ‘anti-terrorist’ action against the US and South
Korea after he accused it of an assassination plot using “biochemical… and nano-poisonous substances.” Un, who is under censure for the murder of his brother in a Malaysian airport with VX is clearly keen to build a counter-narrative, and what better way than claiming that he too has been attacked! At a guess the CBRNe World team can only imagine that the symptoms were a tightening of the chest and pins and needles down his left arm after he had ingested a quantity of healthy, round, bread, cheese and tomato topped treats.
China and OPCW pledge further cooperation Chinese state councillor Yang Jiechi met Ahmeet Uzumcu, the visiting director general of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), and the two pledged to enhance cooperation. Yang said China firmly supports the aims and goals of the convention, strictly carries out related obligations, and will further cooperation with the OPCW.
Space based services to support CBRNe operations The European Space Agency is soliciting proposals for a feasibility study to assess the technical and economic viability of deploying services based on satellite communications, satellite navigation, earth observation data, and/or other space assets to support CBRNE operations. The programme aims to address needs in detection and situational awareness, prediction, early warning and response planning for the benefit of both government and commercial users. The study will eventually propose a roadmap for development.
Fifteen more polio cases in Syria Syria has confirmed 15 more cases of polio, including a child, who may have contracted the disease in Raqqa, a city held by the terrorist group ISIS. The total now stands at 17 cases, all involve paralysis.
World Health Organization (WHO) spokesman Tarik Jasarevic, said in a recent press conference: “We are very worried, because obviously if there is already one case of polio
in a kid that is paralysed it's already an outbreak. We know for example that for every kid who is paralysed almost 200 are asymptomatic, so the virus is circulating, and it’s very serious."
123 killed in Pakistan hazmat A fuel tanker overturned after a burst tyre near Ahmedpur East and spilled its contents all over the road. This was seen as an early Christmas present by the poverty stricken residents that rushed out to collect the fuel in pots and pans. Individuals from outlying villages has started turning up on motorbikes to collect the fuel when it ignited suddenly. Most individuals suffered more than 100% burns and 90 people are reportedly still in hospital.
Dude… I don’t feel so good. The Hamilton County Coroner (CO) stated that a surge in fatal overdoses had been caused by marijuana adulterated with the synthetic opioid fentanyl and that that was not the only drug it was appearing in. It’s not small figures either, with nearly 300 deaths caused by the drug, she stated that it was impossible to tell whether the drug was mixed with the opiate.
Redrawing a Vayl DTRA announced that their new director was going to be Mr Vayl Oxford. Mr Oxford comes to DTRA from Pacific Northwest National Lab, but has previously worked at DTRA and its legacy agencies DSWA (Defence Special Weapons Agency) and DNA (Defence Nuclear Agency). Having worked his way up through DTRA, and having an idea of where the bodies are buried, it will be interesting to see what he changes in the agency.
Home sweet home The 20th CBRNE Command can finally start boxing up their nick nacks and ‘watchamacallits’ as they will be moving out of their temporary accommodation and into a new HQ. Admittedly it won’t be for another two years, but considering they have been in a temporary home for the past 13 years they will presumably be counting the move in ‘sleeps.’ The new HQ costs $73m and will be in Aberdeen North.
