Society’s biggest ever charitable donation
Savers have helped Leek United Building Society’s charity fundraising to literally soar to a record new high. The Society has made its
single biggest donation to the County Air Ambulance Trust with a cheque for £46,629.25, which was handed over to the Trust during Leek United’s 2017 Annual General Meeting. The sum was made possible
thanks to the Society’s popular Air Ambulance Affinity Account – sending the total directly raised for the Trust by Leek United and its account holders to more than £188,000 since the account was first launched in 2008. The Air Ambulance Trust
Affinity Account enables savers to contribute to the Trust’s support of air ambulance operational services in the Midlands while earning interest on their own savings. Leek United’s latest
donation will go towards the County Air Ambulance Trust’s ongoing ‘Golden Hour’ Appeal, which funds vital air ambulance operational services and infrastructure projects across the Central and Avon regions. Kevin Wilson, Leek United’s
Chief Executive, said: “A huge number of people across the communities we serve stand to benefit from the life-saving work of the air ambulances. We are delighted to continue our long-standing support of the County Air Ambulance Trust.” Robert Bertram, Chief
Executive of the County Air Ambulance Trust, added: “I would like to thank all members of Leek United for this amazing amount of money – we are extremely grateful for the support.”

Thriving basketball club Ilkeston Outlaws has a new kit for its Under-12s teams thanks to trentbarton and its revamped ilkeston flyer service. The bus company has become a
key sponsor of the club, which welcomes around 40 young players aged from seven to 12 every Friday in Kirk Hallam. The bus company, which recently
updated and increased its ilkeston flyer fleet, responded to a request from Ilkeston Outlaws Coach Kevin Hubbard to assist in ensuring the club has professional-looking kits for its players.
‘Thanks to the support of trentbarton, our Under-12s will be the smartest players in the league’
Kevin said: “In 2016 we entered
our Under-12s into the Nottinghamshire mini basketball open development league, which they have just won, undefeated – a fantastic achievement for players of this age. “This has meant promotion into
the top division and while the numbers of children training with Ilkeston Outlaws continues to grow, we’ve decided to enter a second team into the development league to allow more young people the chance to play. “The previous kit was tired and
dated with some shirts being too large for the younger players; now, thanks to the support of trentbarton, our Under-12s will be the smartest players in the league. “It’s also great to have an Ilkeston brand, the ilkeston flyer, associated
with the club as we’ve been an Ilkeston-based sports club since 1966 – it all helps to bring in kids to access basketball, learn skills and develop teamwork and respect for themselves and each other.”
Outlaws in their new ilkeston flyer kit
trentbarton is sponsoring 20 kits
for the two teams, which are drawn from Ilkeston itself and from locations further afield such as Amber Valley, Toton, Stapleford and Kimberley.
College offers carers a little TLC
Students at Buxton & Leek College have looked after those who look after others by putting on a special treat for members of the Derbyshire Carers Organisation. NVQ Beauty Therapy students gave eight members
of the group, who spend their time looking after elderly or sick relatives and friends, a pampering session. Students from the Hospitality and Catering courses
baked tasty cakes as an added extra. Amanda Garrington, Buxton & Leek College’s Hair
and Beauty Salon Manager, said: “Carers need TLC, not just the people they care for. It’s important for the carers themselves to get a special treat.” Jean Bell, a volunteer with the Derbyshire Carers,
believes that the students were a credit to the College. She said: “The carers all loved it and so did I. The
refreshments made by the catering students were really tasty. We will definitely be back.”
Derbyshire’s carers get a welcome treat from Buxton & Leek College students
Buxton & Leek College is part of the University of
Derby group. It was formed in August 2012, following the merger of Leek College and the University of Derby’s Buxton College.
