Training

Left: DofE Leaders from Kirklees enjoyed a weekend of training in the Yorkshire Dales in February.

Two e-learning modules (visit DofEtraining.org) • The existing e-induction. This is an overview of the DofE, programme information, DofE roles and structure.

• The Introduction to the Award Verifier. This is a new e-learning module, outlining the key tasks of the Award Verifier role and preparing to attend the Award Verifier course.

Training course • Award Verifier course. This is a training course for Award Verifiers to explore the purpose of the role and gain the skills and information needed to be a successful Award Verifier. The course is between one and three hours of learning, depending on the delivery method.

Completing the DES is one way to gain some of the required skills to support expeditions (although please note that LOs remain responsible for ensuring the adults they use to run their expedition have the required experience).

LOs and adults supporting expeditions may find it useful to consider whether the DES course can help them to increase the skills of their existing expedition support staff.

For further information visit the DES course web page DofE.org/des. Alternatively, contact your DofE Regional/Country Office. You can use the Opportunity Finder (DofE.org/desops) to find the nearest course.

Award Verifier (AV)

We’ve introduced a brand new MTF course from Spring 2017, specifically for Award Verifiers. Introduced in 2013, Award Verifiers are a key role for the DofE.

Award Verifiers verify and grant final approval to all Bronze and Silver Awards achieved by participants in eDofE (Gold Awards are verified by the Award Verifier, but approved by DofE offices). They are independent from the delivery of DofE programmes to the young people and act as an important and independent quality check.

We have now developed a new training course to make sure that all Award Verifiers have the tools to do their role. All new Award Verifiers will now complete the following learning package:

DofE Magazine Issue 27: SUMMER 2017

We recommend that Verifiers also complete the Introduction to the DofE course.

Existing Award Verifiers

Regional and Country DofE offices have authority to require existing Verifiers to attend our new Award Verifiers course.

Our programme requirements and eDofE have developed over time and the new course has the current guidance. DofE Managers and other adults may consider attending the Award Verifier training, to improve their knowledge of the role and how to work best with their Verifiers.

Did you know? Award Verifiers are nominated by their LO but are appointed by the DofE Region/Country Office. Award Verifiers will work closely with the DofE Manager and the LO, but are empowered by the DofE to raise any serious quality issues with the DofE Office. Award Verifiers are an essential role to ensure the quality of DofE Awards is maintained.

Further training developments will follow in 2017. Feedback on ideas for new training courses, materials or potential gaps in our training provision is always welcome. Please send any suggestions or comments to training@DofE.org.
