SUMMER SAIL E

Are your participants looking for a residential that provides an exhilarating challenge? If so, encourage them to find out more about residentials on board Excelsior...

mbarking on a voyage across the North Sea on a ship that was built in the last century is quite a feat for anyone, let alone a young person still learning who they are and where they see themselves in the future.

A week on board a vessel like Excelsior, a vintage sail training vessel fully restored to original condition (with a few modern additions below deck) can be the catalyst for many in developing a stronger sense of self, increasing confidence, communication and social skills. Focusing on team building and working with others, we pride ourselves on the significant impact one week can have on the rest of their lives.

Along with the ship’s crew, Excelsior can take up to 12 more voyage crew, aged 14 years and up. They run DofE Gold Residential trips throughout the year, taking in locations from the Netherlands and France as well as along the south coast of England to Falmouth.

During a residential on board such a historical vessel, participants will receive an authentic experience in sailing – but not a winch handle in sight. They will also build strong relationships with those on board and take away skills that will last a lifetime.

As ASTO members the organisation is accredited to issue Competent Crew certificates for those who complete the criteria. They can also provide access to various funding options through their own bursary fund as well as external sources.

“Everyone got stuck in and had the time of their lives. The crew were amazing with them and encouraged them in their new skills – everyone took part. They saw that their contribution was needed and relevant. Positive self-esteem and team building was flying the flag. They even scrubbed the decks first thing Sunday morning with keenness!” Team leader

“On the Excelsior trip I thought it was really exciting! It was a great opportunity to learn new skills and have new experiences. The best part of the trip was when we were getting out to sea and the waves were really big and the boat was rocky. At the end of the trip we had the chance to climb the rigging – I’d never done that before and it was exciting. I would definitely do this again for a longer period of time.” Crew member

“The Excelsior was a once in a lifetime experience. My favourite part was when we were able to put up the sails and sail onto the beautiful calm sea. Before we could start we had to go through some important safety instructions, including what to do if someone fell overboard.” Crew member
