ACTION SEA SAW SIX
Last year saw six DofE participants from St David’s College complete their Gold training and qualifying expeditions aboard a 38 foot yacht. The crew were up against the tides and navigational hazards of the Anglesey and the Menai Strait, but all enjoyed taking charge of the yacht whilst spotting sea birds, seals and dolphins. Rough seas, strong winds, becalming, sea sickness, sun and rain were all overcome and balanced by the beautiful sunsets, crisp sunrises and cold starry nights at anchor.
A TOUCH OF GENIUS
DofE participant Jess, from Parmiter’s School, is visually impaired and for her expedition had to choose particularly accessible routes – not quite so easy in the Brecon Beacons.
The team chose as their aim to represent their
route using touch, so that Jess could have a better understanding of the types of landscapes they were passing. They took pictures during the walk and, in the evening, they drew the pictures on ‘German film’ – a plastic that produces raised lines when drawn on with a pen. Said Jess: “The drawings gave a simple explanation of the landscapes which made my expedition more enjoyable and rewarding.”
FOUR OF A KIND
Flight Lieutenant Kellyann Martin, Commanding Officer of 2490 (Spen Valley) Squadron, Air Training Corps, took up the DofE Diamond Challenge by trekking to Peru, where she saw the Inca settlement of Machu Picchu. She said “I already hold the DofE Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, so when it was announced that there was a Diamond Challenge available to celebrate 60 years of the DofE, I knew that I had to have that certificate too!”
A FIRST TIME FOR EVERYTHING
A Presentation of DofE Awards at Nottingham High School in November saw Tim Cowley of 28th Nottingham Company of The Boys’ Brigade receive his Silver DofE Award. Also present were three former members of the Brigade in Nottingham who achieved their Gold Awards in 1960 (David Thorpe, Bill Peck and Tony Miller) who were invited to mark the 60th Anniversary of the DofE.

Westminster House Youth Club (WHYC) in Nunhead, London, offers its members the chance to do their DofE, with several members achieving Awards every year. Volunteer Mark Hampson joined the WHYC DofE team following his retirement from the police and has helped on Bronze, Silver and Gold expeditions. Mark said: “The inner reward is evident on the smiles of the faces of even the most sceptical, with their enthusiastic recounting of seeing deer for the first time, and their pride at having succeeded in completing the expedition on time and as planned.”
