Employability Team programme: age 15-19+

MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS

With employability skills increasingly being at the forefront of people’s minds when choosing a DofE programme, AAP Officer Jade Herriott provides an update on one of the first Skills section Approved Activity Providers, Young Enterprise, and how their programme helps to boost key employability skills.

Y

oung Enterprise is the UK’s leading charity that empowers young people to harness their personal and business skills. Young Enterprise has a range of programmes that take up to one school year and can be done

through schools or other organisations in order to complete the Skills section of a DofE programme. These projects are normally run as a group and require a regular commitment from all team members.

Company programme: age 15-19

The Company programme gives young people the opportunity to set up and run a real business under the guidance of a business volunteer. Young people make all the decisions about their business, from deciding on the company name and product to creating a plan, managing the company finances, selling to the public at trade fairs and ultimately winding up the firm and paying their taxes.

The Team programme is the only programme of its kind in the UK and is specially designed to help young people who have learning difficulties or disabilities learn about business and set up their own companies. It is an unforgettable experience, encouraging groups of between six and 25 students to work together, interact with adults and grow in confidence as they set up and run their own enterprise, guided every step of the way by a personal business adviser.

Start-up programme: age 17-25

The Start-up programme is designed for university level students as well as students studying vocational courses in further education colleges. The flexible timescale and company parameters make this programme ideal for these groups. This unique programme is designed to connect groups with opportunities to progress, and empower them on their journey towards employment.

Key skills gained

Like the DofE, Young Enterprise makes the connection between school or college and the world of work, enabling young people to develop the knowledge and attitudes they need to succeed, building on eight key skills: • Communication • Confidence • Financial capability • Initiative • Organisation • Problem-solving • Teamwork • Resilience

These skills are the key starting points for any person starting in employment and will help participants develop valuable skills for later life.

Signing up

To get started participants will need to put together a group in order to take part in a programme (they don`t all have to be doing DofE). Their DofE Leader should then contact Young Enterprise on 01865 776 845 or email info@y-e.org.uk.

“Young Enterprise works with us to help engage our young men in purposeful activity which provides them with the key skills they will need to gain employment and reduce the risk of re-offending. The Company programme is the perfect fit. It helps us use our existing activities and has helped improve and quality and variety of employability skills on offer.” Prison Officer, HMP Aylesbury
