TRAINING MATTERS

Following on from the articles in the spring issue of the magazine, Ben Storrar delves further into three significant recent training developments and responds to some of the questions raised to date.

eDofE training

In February, eDofE was redeveloped to start recording adult DofE training information for the first time. This is an exciting step forward, with all training and adult data now saved in eDofE.

We plan to develop eDofE further to increase the support it can give to our Licensed Organisations and improve the administration of adult training. Here is an overview of some key points about eDofE training:

Who can see the training information saved within eDofE? • At this stage, the training functionality within eDofE is for use primarily by DofE staff in Region/Country Offices.

• DofE staff will now use eDofE to view and save information about training – e.g. recording courses and applications, accrediting Expedition Assessors and appointing Course Directors.

• Adults with an eDofE role can view their eDofE training record (i.e. a list of any DofE training we have a record of) on their eDofE profile. If you have the permissions to view other adults, you can view their training record on their profile.

• We haven’t created any new eDofE roles or logins. If an adult attended a DofE training course, it will now be recorded in eDofE; they can, however, only see this if they also have an eDofE role.

What should role holders do if a course is missing from their record? • They should contact the Licensed Organisation (LO) or DofE office that delivered the course to enquire further, providing evidence of the course attended and the dates – usually in the form of an attendance certificate.

Are there plans to develop eDofE further? • We plan to continue to develop eDofE training (see the eDofE update on page 25) and increase the use of eDofE in administering Modular Training Framework (MTF) courses.

• As we are still working out these plans, we will communicate with LOs about these developments in the coming months.

• In the meantime, please note that MTF course administration remains unchanged.

DofE Expedition Skills (DES)

The DES course was added to the DofE’s Modular Training Framework (MTF) in 2016. A growing number of course delegates have attended the DES and developed their expedition skills.

The DES is a new expedition skills training programme. The training covers basic practical and theoretical skills needed to support expeditions on foot (in normal, rural and open countryside – i.e. standard Bronze expedition terrain).

As an ‘entry level’ course, no previous practical experience is required. If you wish to support DofE expeditions on foot but do not have much practical experience or hold an appropriate outdoor qualification, the DES gives you an excellent starting point.

The course comprises approximately 30 hours of practical and theory learning, normally taking place over three days.

The DES is supported by a new e-learning module (visit the Introduction to the Expedition section at DofEtraining.org).
