The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a Royal Charter Company but, first and foremost, it is a Registered Charity, benefitting from charitable status but also carrying all the legal and moral responsibilities that status suggests.
E
nsuring that we focus on our charitable purpose and manage our activities prudently and effectively is the role of the Board of Trustees who act both as legal directors of the company and Trustees of the Charity. They carry a
significant personal and group responsibility alongside their ultimate authority over all that we do. The DofE is extraordinarily fortunate to have a Trustee
Board of skilled, professional and committed individuals, led by our inspiring Chairman, Lord Kirkham. Each brings their own perspective, network of contacts and resources to support and guide our Charity. The mix of business and personal skills displayed by our Board is a great asset as they guide and support me and the executive team in our day to day running of the Charity. Such is their commitment that I know we can rely on their wise council and involvement at any time. They have a wider and arguably more important role to play on behalf of society. The Lord Kirkham CVO Graham founded DFS Furniture Company in 1969 and sold it in 2010. Honoured with a knighthood in 1995 and elevated to the peerage in 1999, he received the CVO in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List 2001. Other than The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award he is involved with The Outward Bound Trust, The Animal Health Trust and the Kennel Club.
HRH The Earl of Wessex KG GCVO The Earl plays an active role in The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, attending events and presenting Awards. He is a Gold Award holder and has been a Trustee of the
Charity since 1988 and is the Chairman of the International Award Association.
Ruth Anderson Ruth has been involved with the Charity for many years and has been an enthusiastic member of the DofE’s Women in Business Group since its foundation in 2003. She joined KPMG in 1976 and was the first female board member of a Big Four firm. She retired from KPMG in 2010, having been Vice Chairman from 2007.

the proper conduct of our Charity, operationally and financially. Responsibilities our Trustees take very seriously throughout their term of office. Our Trustees serve a five year term, often extended to two terms before our governing rules require them to retire.
Farewell and welcome
This year, Sir David Hempleman-Adams retired from the Board (he was knighted in the New Year’s Honours list for his services to young people through the DofE). I am delighted to announce that two new Trustees were appointed in March; Mel Ewell and Julian Hough. See their brief biographies below, along with those of our other terrific Trustees.
On behalf of everyone at the DofE I am going to take the opportunity to thank them for their guidance, generosity and good governance of the world-leading achievement award for young people; The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
Mel Ewell Mel Ewell has a business career that has spanned over 35 years, the last 15 of which he spent as CEO of leading UK public and regulated services provider, Amey. He now holds non-executive director roles in a variety of businesses. Mel has proudly been associated with The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for over 20 years.
Baroness Grey-Thompson DBE Since retiring from competitive sport, Tanni has continued her hard work off the track as a board member for both the London Marathon and the London Legacy Development Corporation. She was appointed a member of Transport for London in 2008 and, since 2010, has served as a non-party political crossbench peer.
Julian Hough Julian Hough is a Founding Partner of the Engine Group – an international communications group working with many of the world’s leading brands. He is Chairman of the advertising division WCRS. Julian is the proud parent of two Gold Award holders.
Malcolm Offord Malcolm is Chairman of Badenoch & Co in Edinburgh, which invests in emerging Scottish manufacturing companies. He is a Regent of Edinburgh University and Chairman of the Development Board of the National Museums of Scotland. He achieved his Bronze, Silver and Gold DofE Awards as a Scottish schoolboy.
Patricia Tehan Patricia is a founding partner of Lygon Group, the board search firm, advising listed and privately-owned businesses on board and senior executive appointments. She
has been a supporter of the DofE since 2009 and is also Vice Chairman of the Women in Business Group and a member of the Corporate Development Group. She is also a trustee of Working for Youth.
Non-Trustee role: Ashok J Rabheru CVO DL Retired as a DofE Trustee, he chairs the Committee co-ordinating fundraising efforts between the DofE in the UK and the International Award Foundation which is also based in the UK.
