Employability

Left: DofE participants from Upton Court Grammar School, an academy in Slough, attending a Heathrow DofE taster day in 2016.

The taster days give an overview of the different types of careers that are out there, as well as highlighting the type of skills and experience applicants would need to have in order to be recruited.

Over 300 DofE participants attended a taster day at Heathrow in 2016, learning more about the exciting spectrum of career opportunities at the airport.

If your young people are doing their DofE near Heathrow, and you are interested in learning more about how to attend a taster day in 2017-18, please contact tasterday@heathrow.com.

Careers fairs

If your school or centre is planning a careers fair, we’d love to hear about it. Send us a note on Facebook (facebook.com/theDofE) or Twitter (@DofE).

Together we can help more young Award holders make that crucial step into the world of work.

We’ve pulled together some top tips to help young people make the most of careers fairs...

Making the most of careers fairs

Go prepared Be sure to have a look ahead of the event to see which employers will be there. Spending a bit of time

getting the background on an organisation will help you to ask specific questions, which helps you better understand the jobs as well as impressing the recruiter by taking an interest in the business.

Dress appropriately Make sure that you make a good first impression. Ensuring

you are presentable when you meet recruiters will help you stick out in their mind as a good candidate.

Sell yourself Bring copies of your CV to share with recruiters, it shows that you are

prepared and also helps get past the small talk and into a meaningful conversation. Be ready to talk about your career interests as well as experiences in and out of the classroom – especially your DofE.

Prioritise Try to arrive early to make sure you have enough time to get around the fair.

If

you have enough time you can visit with employers you are less interested in first – this will help you develop your skills.

Do keep track of the time and remember to make sure that you prioritise speaking to the employers you are most interested in before the fair is over.

Take notes The representative at the fair may not be able to answer all your

questions. Be sure to jot down names, email addresses and phone numbers, as well as any other key information that will be useful after the fair. Getting details for someone you can follow up with can be a big boost to securing your first job.
