PASSPORT to EMPLOYMENT I

Lisa Dorstek visited the Heathrow Jobs and Careers Fair and was amazed at how much high regard businesses have for DofE Award holders...

n February, Heathrow Airport held its tenth annual Heathrow Jobs and Careers Fair, enabling airport-based employers with live vacancies to meet nearly 6,000 talented young people from the local area.

Heathrow is a great supporter of the DofE, and offered the DofE the chance to promote itself to young people and local schools or colleges, encouraging more to sign up to start a DofE programme. Some 92 young people expressed interest in starting their DofE journey as a result.

Heathrow partner company, and DofE supporter, Wilson James also took part to showcase different careers to which young people could aspire. They were one of many employers trying to get young people to expand their horizons and look into the possibility of different careers after school.

Like many other UK companies, Wilson James encourages young applicants to shout about their DofE Award if they’ve achieved it, as they really recognise the broad skills the DofE helps young people build.

Chief People Officer at Heathrow, Paula Stannett, explained why Heathrow wanted to profile the benefits of doing the DofE: “Success isn’t only about getting a job. It’s about becoming the ‘you’ that you want to be.

When you do your DofE you give back to others; you practice skills that are important to you; you test your own limits and stretch your horizons. You make Britain a better place to live. And for every passenger travelling through our airport, and everyone who lives in the UK, that really matters.”

Sarah Furzer, HR Advisor and Gold Award holder at Heathrow, said: “The DofE has given me the platform to my ‘best self’, who only sees life’s obstacles as an opportunity, not a limitation. I have grown in confidence and now enjoy many of the things I used to fear.

I

really feel that I owe it all to being given the opportunity to achieve my Gold DofE Award through Heathrow.”

Peter McGowan, HR Director at Wilson James, said: “We were delighted to host a stand at Heathrow’s careers fair this year. We wanted to get involved again because it’s a great opportunity for us to meet so many inspiring young people and talk to them about career opportunities at Wilson James. We continue to work closely with the Heathrow Academy to recruit and support young people and have a number of security and logistics roles across our Heathrow operation.” Find out more at wilsonjames.co.uk/careers.

A taste of the future

Meanwhile, Heathrow has gone even further, undertaking to offer special work experience taster days to young people doing their DofE in five boroughs close to the airport – Hounslow, Hillingdon, Ealing, Spelthorne and Slough.
