Female Focus 3 things an optician should do in a complete eye test
Regular eye tests are essential for clear, comfortable vision. They are an important health check too - the optometrist checks the health of your eyes, can spot indications of other medical conditions and refer you for further tests and treatment if necessary. It’s recommended to have an eye test annually as a child, then every two years from 16 upwards, unless otherwise indicated by your optometrist.
Specsavers Opticas passionately believe that everyone
should demand a quality eye test which doesn’t simply check your vision, but also contains checks for signs of the most common optical conditions. If you don’t know whether your optician is doing these tests, then ask them. If they are unable to provide health checks as part of the test, change to an optician who can, as without regular in depth eye tests you can miss the signs of these conditions developing until they become serious.
Here are three things you need to make sure your optometrist is doing to keep your eyes healthy -
1. Check the pressure inside each eye - Using a non-contact tonometer, the optometrist blows a few puffs of air at each of your eyes in turn. The air bounces back at the instrument, giving a measurement of the pressure inside each eye. This is an important test, as high pressure can indicate the early stages of glaucoma, a sight-threatening condition.
2. Checks on the back of the eye - The optometrist should use an ophthalmoscope or digital retinal camera to examine the retina at the back of the eye, including the blood vessels and the front of the optic nerve. This important test can see changes which can indicate diseases such as diabetes or high blood pressure.
3. Testing your visual field – A visual field screener randomly flashes dots of light on a black background. If you fail to see any of the dots, this can be an indication of a blind spot. If the central vision is being effected, this can be a sign of macular degeneration, something which can destroy central vision. This is very serious and so needs to be caught early. This test is also important for spotting signs of glaucoma.
Once the test has been completed, the optometrist will explain his findings and recommend the best options to improve your vision. If any signs of health conditions have been found during the eye test, they will refer you to a medical professional for further tests and treatment.
