Your Community Magazine P is for PILATES By Lorraine Young, UK Pilates Academy – Spain

As a Health and Fitness professional for the last 30 years I often think back to how I got into Pilates. Having taught everything from Step, Aerobics, Yoga and latterly Les Mills BodyPump & BodyBalance I found myself with a bad back in my forties, and preparing for a back operation with immense trepidation. I had to wait three months for the operation and my surgeon suggested Pilates; I decided to give it a go, although not really believing it would work. I can honestly say that it changed my life and cured my back problem resulting in no need for the operation. The result I had was so amazing that I decided to train to become a Pilates Instructor in the Pilates Classical method.

I have never looked back and find the classes I teach extremely rewarding. As an instructor of other disciplines

you

can use the Pilates method in all your classes, as well as everyday life. I believe it

make you a better instructor, and the benefits to your clients potentially changing.

Pilates can really make a difference to your health without taking its toll on your body. If you want to be more flexible, stronger and well balanced Pilates is a great option. The benefits that you and your class will learn and enjoy give a healthier, stronger and more flexible lifestyle, to say nothing of the stress release.

The Benefits of Pilates Improves flexibility. Doing the stretches and exercises helps elongate your muscles and increase your range of motion, and improve your performance in other workouts. Increases muscle strength and tone. The ‘core muscles’ of your body remain contracted and engaged during a Pilates workout, keeping them lean and building better endurance and strength, with less risk of injury. Improves breathing. With proper, deep breathing, blood is better able to deliver oxygen to the appropriate muscles and organs, which can cleanse the body of toxins and helps muscles recover better. Improves posture. Pilates makes you more aware of your ability to pull your stomach in and pull your shoulders down for good posture and spinal alignment no matter what activity you are undertaking. Reinforces strong, mobile joints. Pilates elongates and strengthens your muscles, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility and it helps ward off arthritis. Improves aerobic conditioning. Pilates

increases lung

capacity and circulation through the deep breathing done during each move and exercise. Builds better balance. Practising Pilates improves physical coordination and balance and promotes good posture.
