Sharing and Caring
When you live alone whether by choice or by loss the impact can be liberating or devastating. Choosing to live alone brings freedom to make decisions and to enjoy being independent. Loneliness and isolation are managed because you have made this choice. With a loss
whether by bereavement, separation or ill health the impact can be debilitating and often the challenges are seemingly insurmountable. Within relationships there is a mutual sharing and caring for each other and a need to consider another persons feelings. Suddenly to not have this leaves a void that’s hard to fill.
Loneliness is described as social isolation and often this happens as we get older and due to health issues or fragility this makes it hard to retain friendships or take part in local activities. Technology is amazing for contact but many do not have these skills. Once mobility is affected the result can be further isolation and loss of independence - can you imagine yourself in this situation? What would you do? If you know a neighbour or friend finding themselves in this situation would you feel able to tell them about SPAN? Would you like to meet us first to be confident that we are sincere in our intentions?
That is why SPAN was formed. SPAN stands for ‘Supporting People As Needed’. We offer two support groups in Calpe and the Jalon Valley where people feeling lonely or needing support can drop in for a coffee and a chat. We find that by people sharing their experiences and by caring about each other this really helps. SPAN is led by an experienced team and you will be made most welcome. Coming to a new group for the first time is not easy and so we offer to visit you at home where we can meet each other and explain how we can help you and how the group works.
Locally there are charities and organisations who have helped the community with donations and whose members raise funds for local projects and good causes. We would ask that you support this new venture by circulating information about SPAN to your membership who then may be able to identify people who may benefit by being supported in this way.
Often lonely people need help to reach out and to feel welcomed - you can help by giving information and our contact details to them and we will respond.
We would welcome the opportunity to attend members meetings and talk about our hopes for SPAN. Like many organisations we are looking for volunteers. If you have experience of working within the caring sector or have professional experience of supporting the bereaved and vulnerable people we would like to hear from you.
Our ethos is to demonstrate that caring for each other and sharing experiences can be rewarding for all involved.
We really hope the group will be successful and look forward to meeting you. For more details about the group meetings please telephone 674 375 592. Avril Howard.
