Dartmouth Food Festival October 25th -28th 2012

Better than All the Rest: Food Festivals are popping up everywhere and it seems there’s one almost every weekend. So the challenge these days is to differentiate ourselves from all the others and to stand out from the crowd.

So what makes Dartmouth Food Festival different? Well there’s Dartmouth for a start. Some festivals are in a tent in a field and could be anywhere, but when you’re standing on the Embankment enjoying a mackerel bap and a pint of Golden Decade (this year’s Festival beer from Bridgetown Brewery) it won’t be easy to forget where you are.

Then there’s the atmosphere, which many people have told me is friendly, relaxed and distinct from other places. I think there’s a combination of factors at work here. The location of course is one of them but the integration of the Festival with the town is also important and we’ll continue to resist any ideas about moving the Festival into Coronation Park and away from the town centre. There’s also the deliber- ate timing of the festival to coincide with half term, which

means we get a nice mix of locals, holidaymakers, regional visitors and families. Finally there’s our policy of inviting several small sponsors to support the festival rather than one or two large ones. This saves the Festival from becom- ing too corporate and means that local businesses can get more involved.

The other major difference to many Festivals is that Dart- mouth is free to enter. Every year this presents us with huge challenges when it comes to balancing the budget (them marquees ain’t cheap you know) and we have to do lots of fundraising; but it makes it such an attractive day out for everyone, especially those with young families, and that’s the way we like it.

Have a great Festival, David Jones, Festival Chairman.
