On the Water A

fter a great summer of cruising and racing on our boats, we will soon start to focus on the laying up season ahead. Southampton Boat Show has been and gone and we now look towards the off-season’s maintenance plans and projects. One area of focus and often a subject to cause some confusion can be “ what shall we do to the surface finish of the vessel?” ie the topsides - from the waterline to the rubbing strake and then the decks and superstructure. Most yachts and motorboats are constructed with an outer layer of gelcoat. This is in fact the first layer to be applied to the mold; this layer is present to protect the underlying GRP (glass reinforced plastic) from moisture ingress and to provide a smooth cosmetically appealing and highly durable surface. Over time this gelcoat will lose its deep gloss finish to appear dull and often through manufacturing methods micro pores and other defects will present themselves. These tiny pinholes collect dust and dirt and with UV damage detract from the vessels appearance. Pigmented gelcoat, particularly red, blues and greens are especially susceptible to damage from the affect of UV... even with the summer we have had! Where possible, gelcoat surfaces can be professionally treated to restore their original lustre. Crystal Marine, the Sunseeker Torquay & One Brokerage approved service and support agent has a wealth of expertise in restoring even the most tired vessels. You can contact Crystal Marine on 07775 906223.

Finishing problems can often arise through inappropriate compounding products being used, particularly those that are not designed for the marine market. Often lacking UV protection, these products offer no long-term performance and can stain or damage gel coats. In addition, without certification or product recording, there is no traceability if something does go wrong. Regularly, we find automotive products are used on gelcoat. These are great on cars but
