Moving away from the Flavel, for the next foray into

music, we find ourselves back, at long last, at The Wind- jammer, whose summer hiatus is now officially over. And what a way to end it. If you were entertained and amazed by the excellent Keith James’ set of Nick Drake songs earlier in the year, then make a note to go along on 23rd October, when he returns, but this time with an homage to the inspirational poet/musician that is Leonard Cohen. Free razor-blades will be issued at the door. Comedy alert! Comedy alert! And cooking. And an odd mixture of both at The Flavel on October 26th. Hardeep Singh Koli is probably best known for his roving-reporter schtick on TV, but he also, by all accounts, wowed ‘em at Edinburgh with this odd mash-up. Comments range from ‘brilliant’ to ‘what the hell was he thinking?’ Once again, personally, I find his whole world-weary cyni- cism and what-you-going-to-do-but-we-know- better slyness just a little too world weary and cynical. Laugh man, it’s not all open for discussion! November rears its increasingly autumnal head and, guess what? Yet another live broad- cast at the Flavel…and with Simon Russell Beale again… and it’s Shakespeare!!! Huzzah! 1st November is the live performance and 2nd and 3rd are ‘encore’ performances. ‘Ti- mon of Athens’ is no barrel of laughs, let it be said right from the outset, and it is classed as one of the Bard’s ‘problem’ plays. It has been mooted, from the 1920’s onward, that Shakespeare had a co-author for Timon and that the most likely candidate was Thomas Middleton, but these conjectures are based upon the apparent presence of ‘rare vocabu- lary’ and previous analyses. It’s an historical/ political play, probably written around 1605-6 but to see this ‘live’ with Mr Russell Beale will be a treat. Read up a bit first though, it’s quite complex and a small understanding of socio- political mores of the time would be helpful.

DARTMOUTH FILM SOCIETY

Running out of space but DO NOT FORGET – 9th

and 10th November and The Dart Drama Festival rolls into town. Local theatre groups getting together for the sixth year to show you what they get up to. Unfortunately it’s a slightly reduced programme this year, but if there isn’t the requisite support from various paries then things like art, in whatever form it takes, will inevitably suffer. SO… give them your support, it will be hugely appreciated. There are documentary films, retrospective art exhibi-

tions, more comedy and, lest we forget, some excellent blues to had as well. All life is here and with your help, it won’t need an iron-lung to survive.•
