morning waiting for the call back. I itched every inch of the way. Jim, as always, remained calm and unshakable. Clearly, he didn’t understand the gravity of the situation. Finally, the motel man-

ager called and assured us that although she was calling in a professional exterminator, most likely what I saw was not a bed- bug but a tick. The area was overrun with them this spring, she said. My relief was palpable that the only thing we would likely have to deal with is disease bearing flesh- burrowing ticks, and not, heaven forbid, bedbugs. Within two hours she

called back and the exter- minator confirmed that he found no bedbugs and only one tick in the room that we had occupied. All of a sudden we were both hungry for lunch. Another thing I am ab-

solutely paranoid about while traveling is the safe- ty of our dogs, always double-checking that the car door is locked when they are in it. We returned from lunch to find to our horror that the back win- dow had been left wide open and the dogs were nowhere in sight! Once again I am a banshee running around the park- ing lot screaming “Chica!” “Dually!” until two sleepy little fur-faces poked up

from their shaded hidey- hole on the car floor. By this time I was totally hoarse and Jim enjoyed a crises-free hour while I, exhausted from the morn- ing’s dramatics, dozed with the dogs cuddled in my arms…but not before I checked them thoroughly for ticks. Fast-forward to that eve-

ning and yet another mo- tel room. We were finally back in New Hampshire and going out for supper, taking the dogs with us. As always, I leashed up Chica and thought Jim had Dually. Jim thought I had both dogs. It wasn’t until we exited the motel that we realized we left Dually behind. But when

Jim returned to the room, it was empty. Figuring that Dually snuck out through our feet and was running up and down the corridors with joyful aban- don again Jim did a thor- ough ground floor search, but no Dually. This was not happening…to “lose” Dually three times in one day? In the back of the motel

a couple was in the middle of a Tai Chi routine try- ing to seek out a little solitary peace while I – for the second time that day – ran frantically around the parking lot screaming Dually’s name. No luck. After what seemed like an eternity Jim emerged from the motel with Dually in

his arms. Apparently, our little escapee streaked directly into the motel of- fice and made himself at home while the busy staff figured someone would soon come along to claim him. So went our first night back in New Hamp- shire. The following day we would arrive at Twin Tamarack Campground in New Hampton to set up our rig for the sum- mer. But for this night it was enough to go to sleep knowing that our family was safe and all together…and there were no creepy crawlies gnaw- ing on us. We hoped.
