Staying in Shape by
Bowling, Golfing and Playing Softball! Should bowling be con-
sidered a sport? Or is it more of an activity, a game, or a pastime? It’s now officially a var-
sity high school sport in many states, including New Hampshire, and nu- merous universities now have intercollegiate bowl- ing teams as well. Still, it just doesn’t
seem right that some of the top bowlers I’ve seen are beer-bellied, chain- smokers who happen to be adept at converting the 7-10 split when not rolling strikes. And the same holds
true for pool players, golf- ers, and softball players, if not race car drivers. Can one be an athletic sports-standout while battling obesity? OK. As a public service,
I’m going to betray some of my fellow male cretins and share some inside information with our fe- male readers who have husbands or partners who claim they need to get out of the house and do sports with the guys to “stay in shape.” These men are lying to
you! Unless the sport in
question is basketball, they would be better off staying at home with you and working around the house. I’ve seen men explain to
their wives that they play golf because they need the exercise. The wife dutifully nods in the af- firmative and says “Good for you. You have been putting on some weight lately.” Then the wife busies
herself with housework, yard-work, and chi ld
rearing while the hus- band goes to the coun- try club and puts half a case of beer in a cooler, which he positions on the back of a golf cart, and rides around for 18 holes. Then he’ll have another drink and dinner at the “19th Hole” and re- turn home too exhausted to mow the lawn. No wonder he’s putting on weight! If your husband tells
you he needs to play softball to stay in shape, then you’re a fool if you believe him. I’ve played in softball leagues and sometimes saw players show up drunk for big games. They’d spend half the game sitting in a dugout smoking, and the other half standing in the outfield. After the game they went to the team-sponsoring pub for drinks and dinner and then return home too exhausted to mow the lawn. No wonder they put on weight! Now with bowling more
popular than ever, some husbands are now mod- ern-day three-sport ath- letes. Between golf, soft- ball, and bowling these guys are going to spend countless dollars just
getting heavier and more out-of-shape while per- plexing erstwhile spous- es who can’t understand their husbands’ increas- ing rotundity. A possible solution?
Women could accompany husbands on these golf- ing, bowling and softball outings. The husbands would really like that. Right guys?
Women and Wrestling NEWS ITEM – The Board
of Directors for the Mas- sachusetts Interscholas- tic Athletic Association voted unanimously to add girls wrestling as an MIAA-sponsored girls competition in the Bay State. This development rais-
es all kinds of issues and scenarios, most of which I’ll avoid at this time. But I’ll address one of
them, at the risk of being politically incorrect. What about weigh-ins? When I was a college
Sports Information Di- rector we published team rosters for sports. Natu- rally, the football and men’s basketball rosters included heights and weights. But the women’s basketball roster didn’t include players’ weights,

as that information was deemed “sensitive.” But wrestling absolute-
ly requires weigh-ins, as wrestlers compete in weight classes. These weigh-ins occasionally create problems for wres- tlers seeking to make weight while fostering eating disorders in some men. These disorders have traditionally been much more rampant amongst females. I just wonder how many girls will strive to compete as “heavyweights.” I’m sure the MIAA will
deal with this weighty is- sue in the best way.
Sports Quiz Why are the follow-

Sportsquote “I think my favorite
sport in the Olympics is the one in which you make your way through
the snow, you stop, you shoot a gun, and then you continue on. In most of the world, it is known as the biath- lon, except in New York City, where it is known as winter.” ~Michael Ventre, L.A. Daily News
