Thank you! Thank you
to all you boaters, all 361,938 of you, that have allowed a Lake Host to in- spect your boat and trailer for hitchhiking fragments of aquatic plants since 2002 through the New Hampshire Lakes Asso- ciation’s Lake Host Pro- gram. Through this exotic aquatic plant species edu- cation and prevention pro- gram, and with the help of boaters, Lake Hosts have prevented more than 1,000 fragments of exotic aquatic plants from in- festing and ruining some of New Hampshire’s most pristine lakes and ponds. This summer marks the tenth season of the Lake Host Program—with more than 700 Lake Hosts sta- tioned at 90 public boat ramps throughout the state, Lake Hosts are back to help you keep New

Sixty-five of these waterbodies, including Lake Winnipesaukee, are infested with variable mil- foil, a submerged aquatic plant that some people say looks like a fuzzy green pipe cleaner. Exotic aquatic plants spread by hitchhiking their way from an infested waterbody to an uninfested waterbody attached to boat hulls and stuck in various nooks and crannies on trailers— even an exotic plant frag- ment an inch or two long attached to a boat or trail- er can spend a few days out of the water before See LAKES on 18
