being released into a new waterbody and causing a new infestation.

Who are Lake Hosts and what do they do? Lake Hosts are easily

identifiable by their bright blue t-shirts and you will find them stationed at the end of many of the most used boat ramps through- out the state this sum- mer. Lake Hosts range in age from 16 to 95 years old, and they all have one common goal—to help boaters prevent the spread of exotic aquatic plants, like variable mil- foil, from lakes and ponds infested with exotic plants into waterbodies that are free-from these nuisance plants. Some Lake Hosts are paid to work at the ramp—these Hosts are employed by the New Hampshire Lakes Associ- ation and they are usually high school and college students earning money to help pay for college. (For some, Lake Hosting is their first real job!) How- ever, most Lake Hosts are adult volunteers from the local lake association or other community group, happy to have an excuse to sit by the lake for a few hours a week reading a book or the newspaper (maybe even knitting a sweater or playing a game of cards with a friend) while waiting to greet the

next boater who comes to See LAKES on 19
