Your Health is in Your Hands

you been out driving, the sun is shining, it is a beautiful day. Then you see this person and they are not by the lake, they are not relaxing…. they are running. You think to yourself, “Man, you couldn’t pay me to do that.” Maybe it’s like a fam-
ily member I have who used to always say, “why is that guy running…. nothing is chasing him!” Honestly, I think that is how a lot of people feel. I wi l l run when I am chased and not a second sooner. The truth of the matter is many people believe they can’t run or can’t get out and walk. We all know that getting out and moving is a great choice for our health. Yet, many of us are not making that choice a re- ality very often. Why is that the case?
Why aren’t we making healthier choices when it comes to movement? Typically there are two reasons we hear from people in our chiroprac- tic offices: time and mon- ey. The fact is, making

healthy movement a part of our lives requires very little of either. Obviously, in terms
of time moving even a little more would be bet- ter than no movement. It takes as little as 30 minutes per day to gain health benefits from aer- obic exercise. That’s one sitcom. That’s how long you played around on Facebook. We all have the necessary time even if you don’t have a single block of time. There is research that indicates 3 short 10 minute bouts of exercise have the similar benefits as one long 30 minute session (Journal of Obesity (2000) 24, 1303-1309). So if time is that cramped, simply wake up earlier, eat a shorter lunch, or walk/ run right after dinner. Right there you have your three ten minute sessions. You can do this. This isn’t an op- tion. If you really can’t find the time, then you have to change your pri- orities and make the time. Your health is too valuable.
Moneywise, exercise
can cost almost nothing. You can get a gym mem- bership, but you don’t have to. You really don’t need anything but your shoes and the desire to step out your front door and get going! There are debates about what shoes are the best for you: traditional sneak- ers or minimalist bare- foot sneakers. Whi le that is an interesting de- bate, the fact is to start you don’t need to worry too much one way or the other as much as you just need to get out and go. You don’t need fan- cy weights or gimmicky tools. Walking, running,
and bodyweight exer- cises can take you quite far.
Now if time and money
concerns are out of the equation are, then what is stopping us? Move- ment provides so many great benefits: weight control, mood control (less depression even), fights chronic illness- es, and actually gives you more energy (www. mayoclinic,com/health/ exerciseHQ01676). Heck, the book “Spark” by John Ratey, M.D. discusses how exercise improves and changes brain func- tion. You have the power to change your health in amazing ways. Just get started and
the benefits will come rolling in. There is no panacea in healthcare, but movement is close. Start with a short walk and before you know it you may over time feel like adding in some run- ning. Your health and energy will increase tre- mendously. Then, before you know it people will drive down the road and there you will be….run- ning. They will wonder what is chasing you and you will smile and laugh to yourself because you know the truth: you aren’t being chased, but rather you are chasing. What are you chasing? A healthier, happier you.
