the review 53 TOURISM UPDATE
One hundred years of Mohawk motoring
NEW England is celebrating a century of scenic touring by car as its historic
Mohawk Trail –
America’s first designated scenic auto-touring route – turns 100 years old.
The Mohawk Trail was initially used as a trading route connecting Native American tribes and was later used by European settlers, connecting English settlements in Boston and Deerfield with Dutch settlements in New York. During the American Revolution, American patriots recruited troops along the trail to capture a cannon at Fort Ticonderoga, New York. The trail is one of the most-
loved scenic drives in the region. Its designation as a scenic auto route by
the Massachusetts
Legislature in 1914 heralded the start of scenic leisure driving here with many other routes quickly established.
These drives, in the
six states, (Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Vermont and Connecticut) offer stunning fall foliage, breathtaking forests and mountains, some of the country’s best heritage and architecture.

THANKSGIVING AND SHOPPING BLACK Friday may sound a little scary and a title suited best to an 80’s horror movie, but it is a definite in the annual calendar when travelling to the US. Mark your calendars for November 28, exchange the dosh to dollars and take an extra suitcase – there are bags of bargains to be had. Taking place the day after Thanksgiving
BY STEVE HARTRIDGE NEXT summer will see the introduction of British Airways’ A380s on the San Francisco route. This will be the airline’s second city in California served by the A380, after Los Angeles. British Airways has already started A380 flights to Washington DC where it has also re-opened its lounge (pictured above) to extend its ground facilities. San Francisco therefore becomes the third US destination to welcome the superjumbo flagship aircraft. The A380 offers 469 seats in luxurious double-
decker cabins and will operate five services a week during the summer months. British Airways operates a total of 14 flights a week to San Francisco. British Airways is also increasing flights to Miami, from 14 to 17 a week, from March 30, 2015 to May 2, 2015. The increase will continue on from the winter 2014 season for five weeks, up to and including the busy Easter holiday period. It will then revert to a double daily service.

don’t overfill that suitcase. You’ll need to fit in that new iPad, a pair of converse, presents for the kids, an American flag and so much more…
