Swiss celebrations
SWITZERLAND went to town in London to celebrate 150 years of winter holidays for British visitors to the Swiss Alps – a concept triggered by a wager made between a St Moritz hotelier and some English travellers in 1864. He won his wager - persuading them that winter holidays can be as invigorating as summer ones - and this was the start of British winter holidays in Switzerland. To mark the 150th anniversary,
26
tourist office staff from locations across the Swiss Alps gathered with representatives of the British tourism industry at London’s Thames-side Vinopolis centre for a programme of presentations followed by dinner. Betweem them the British and the Swiss representatives totalled just 150 people - one for each year of the anniversary being celebrated.

NEVIS is on track to achieve its aim of being the ‘greenest place on the planet’ according to CEO of Nevis Tourism Authority, Greg Phillip. Philip said: “We want to be ‘the Norway of the Caribbean’ and are fast developing a ‘waste to energy’ programme through recycling. We already have a wind farm, will have solar energy by 2015 and will tap into our geothermal resources by the end of 2017, possibly providing enough geothermal energy for the entire eastern Caribbean. He added: “Our approach to
tourism is holistic and exclusive especially given our small size, population and bed stock of just 406 rooms.”

Etihad Airways forges new partnerships
ETIHAD Airways has unveiled a six- airline partnership designed to give added benefits to passengers. The Abu Dhabi-based airline has
teamed up with airberlin, Air Serbia, Air Seychelles, Jet Airways and Darwin Airline to form Etihad
Airways
Partners. It is promising passengers enhanced networks and frequent flyer benefits and is founded on a strong commercial partnership and shared values.
The airline says that any carrier can
become an Etihad Airways Partner even if it is part of an existing alliance, like airberlin, which is also a member of the oneworld alliance. James Hogan, president and CEO of Etihad Airways, says the partnership
“will bring synergies and efficiencies for participating airlines on the one side, and enhanced network choice, service and frequent flyer benefits for the consumer on the other.” He adds that Etihad
Airways
Partners differs from legacy airline alliances by offering benefits ‘well beyond pure commercial cooperation’. “The
potential for network
alignment to maximise flight connectivity for passengers, together with a shared passion for superior service, are central to the ethos of the Etihad Airways Partner concept,” he said. The partner airlines will also have access to economies of scale and operational synergies.
