Significant advances at Severstal-metiz plants

The Severstal-metiz Group of factories has installed new equipment for the manufacture of large diameter fasteners, in order to meet increasing demand from construction projects preparing for the 2018 Football World Cup.

project started with the installation of a hot heading press for nuts and was completed with the installation of three nut-tapping lines. In addition to increase output volume of large diameter

products the company aims to manufacture new types of fasteners and improve the general efficiency of its equipment. Alexander Shevelev, general director of Severstal-metiz,

commented: “Demand for large fasteners will grow because of the preparation for the Football World Cup in 2018, so we plan to increase our presence in the market for construction products. Fastener manufacturing is a highly competitive sector, which is why we are constantly developing and perfecting all aspects of our activity. In this case modernisation of our manufacturing capabilities is a logical step in strengthening our position in the market.” Severstal-metiz has also expanded its range of welded

connectors, manufacturing shear connectors to a new size standard. Pilot lots of 16mm diameter connectors in 100mm and 150mm lengths passed control tests in the presence of a bridge inspector at the Group’s Oryol laboratory before being shipped to the client. Previously Severstal-metiz had supplied 22mm diameter connectors used on various projects including construction of the Podolsko-Voskresenskiy bridge in Kyiv, and a junction of the M10 highway between Pushkino and Kolpino. Futher expansion of the shear connectors range used in civil buildings will be supported by development of new lengths and diameters. Supply of the connectors became possible after they

asteners are being produced on a new production line purchased from a Belgian fastener machinery supplier. The first shipments of fasteners made on the new equipment have already been delivered to clients. The

Paton Institute of Electric Welding at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and also at the Voronezh Research Center for Bridges. Severstal-metiz was the first Russian producer to begin making shear connectors for steel reinforced bridges and is currently unique in Russia and the CIS in having this capability. Alexander Shevelev said: “Now our possibilities regarding production engineering and equipment allow us to constantly expand our range of products, manufacturing all new standard sizes as well as special designs.” The Group has also supplied grade 12.9 high-strength fasteners

for the CSKA stadium in Moscow. Specialists at the company developed new production capabilities to heat treat a special grade of material, which has provided fasteners with the necessary strength requirements. Severstal-metiz is currently the only fastener maker producing industrial volumes of strength class 12.9 fasteners conforming to GOST P 52644−52646−2006 in the Russian Federation. The first batch of the higher strength fasteners were supplied for installation at a stadium being constructed in Tyumen. Further shipments were made in May for the CSKA stadium in Moscow and more are planned for other infrastructure projects. The Severstal-metiz Orel plant is able to manufacture

fasteners in various strength classes and with a range of coatings – including galvanic zinc, thermodiffusion zinc and hot dipped galvanised – at various thicknesses to meet customer requirements. High-strength fasteners in accordance with GOST P 52644−52646−2006 have already been supplied for several large sporting structures including the Olympic arenas and the Formula 1 circuit in Sochi, as well as the stadiums of ‘Zenith’ in St. Peterburg and ‘Spartak’ in Moscow.
