STORMY WEATHER FOR SALES


Doesn’t it seem odd that in a country where the weather so rarely does what is expected of it we are continually caught out by its unseasonal behaviour? Yet we are time and again, as is evident in many a recent high street footfall and consumer spending poll.


Is it any wonder that consumers sometimes do not want to buy what shops have not just been stocking, but also actively promoting? New garden furniture isn’t on everyone’s list of priorities when it’s cold and raining outside. Fair enough it’s tricky to pull TV ad campaigns but other forms of marketing, such as instore and email can be more responsive, so activity can be adapted to reflect what the weather is actually doing.


Like the rest of us retailers are going to have to get used to the fact that in Britain unpredictable weather is the rule, rather than the exception to it. This means planning for the best but being ready to react when the worst happens ­ and not being too eager to stop stocking jumpers the second spring should have sprung.
