continue to increase their store footage.” The queuing area is the perfect place to inform customers about the brand and promotions, both in store and online. Large format digital screens provide a great way to keep the messages fresh and also help prevent customers from getting bored while queuing. Tensator have recently launched a new virtual assistant which is their smallest and most cost effective yet. The virtual assistant can sit anywhere in store and the base unit is made of interchangeable covers creating a full surround or three sided wrap, making it ideal for advertising and promotion. In recent research in to the functionality of the virtual assistant it showed that the product was perfect for influencing customer behaviour in store. “By literally bringing messages to life and creating a real ‘wow factor,’ it is a proven medium to increase sales, drive efficiency and increase dwell time and traffic.” says Tensator.

This new virtual assistant is a perfect addition to any queuing space as it adds interest and can also deliver key messages to a captive audience. Tensator virtual assistant solutions are proven to generate uplift in product sales by up to an impressive 75 percent.

Looking to the future we may see the need for queuing to be reduced altogether. With the use of tablets, some stores are already completing customer transactions at the shelves or even in seated areas and with other retailers offering mobile EPOS, staff are freed up to help customers. Tim Ellis from Momentum says “The other advantage of this approach is that staff are out on the floor providing good customer service to shoppers rather than being stuck behind a till.”

I know that I have a lot better things to be doing than standing in a queue but I also feel that we won’t see the back of queuing for a long time, so all these measures that retailers are taking to keep queue lengths down and keep us entertained while we wait, are welcome.

I hope, that with all these new advances, technology continues to work alongside good customer service. I have often found my self in the supermarket at the self‐service

This not only frustrates me but also makes me question whether it would have been quicker to queue and be served by a sales assistant. Retailers need to remember this in their quest to create a quicker more automated queue system.
