Leaders 2013 | 21 Support services switch pays off

COSTAIN Costain House Vanwall Business Park Maidenhead Berkshire SL6 4UB T: 01628 842444 www.costain.com

COSTAIN is a major player in the water sector with framework contracts with Northumbrian Water, Severn Trent, Southern Water, United Utilities and D ˆwr Water Welsh Water. The group is one of the bidders, with Veolia and Atkins for a share of Thames Water’s £3B alliance. It has just lost out to Kier in its bid for May Gurney Infrastructure Services. It is the second time Costain has failed in its quest to acquire − in 2011 it lost out to Interserve for Mouchel. However, chief executive Andrew Wyllie has not ruled out future acquisitions, saying Costain will “continue

to develop the business both organically and by acquisitions”. Last year, Costain formed a joint venture with Severn Trent Water to create a complete business water management solution for high volume commercial and industrial users. Moving away from UK construction sector has proved to be a wise move for Costain, as with other players. Switching more into support services has been one of the major areas of development: Costain has a £2.4B forward order book comprising in excess of 90% repeat orders, and covers highways, rail, power, airports, water, hydrocarbons and chemicals, as well as nuclear process and waste. Servicing existing networks such as maintaining sewers is an example of such work. Costain handled the Peacehaven Wastewater Treatment Works, Southern Water’s £300M environmental improvement scheme that will treat 95Ml of wastewater

each day. Costain provided consulting services in the design of the 11km-long Upper Thames Reservoir. It is part of the E5 Alliance: Wanlip STW, a four contractor collaborative partnership with Severn Trent Water, delivering design and construction services for nine major complex sewage treatment plants for £200M over five years.
