committed to customer service. Our motto is “Making a Difference in People’s Lives.” Each member looks for opportunities each day to help people in a variety of ways. The department is led by Chief Kevin Jones. Chief Jones is a 23 year veteran of the


department. Chief Jones’ administrative staff is fi lled by two secretaries. They do everything from taking phone calls and purchasing to being heavily involved in our public education program. The department is staffed by 3 platoons of ten personnel. They are assigned to work 24 hour shifts to provide protection 24 hours a day 365 days a year. These are highly trained personnel with national accreditation in fi refi ghting, rescue and EMT-Paramedic.

organized in 1899 when a group of men volunteered their time to extinguish fi res. The YFD was formally organized as a part of city government on July 6, 1914 when the city council approved ordinance #66, appointing members and assigning duties. The fi refi ghters fi rst used buckets

and progressed to a hand drawn hose cart around 1900. The equipment was fi rst stored on the ground fl oor of a two story bandstand that is currently 5th and Main St. The YFD currently has two fi re stations. The headquarters station is at 302 S. 5th. This station was built in 1968. Station 2 is located at 102 S. Ranchwood Blvd. and was built in 1975. A new station will be opened in the late spring of this year. It will become the new headquarters station. It is a 26,000 sq. ft. facility that will house the administration and up to nine fi refi ghters per shift. The station on Ranchwood will be closed and the station on S. 5th St. will become Station 2. The department is anticipating 4 new pieces of equipment this year. A new pumper, tanker, brush-pumper and command vehicle will be delivered in 2012.
