Mabel C. Fry Public Library is located at 1200 Lakeshore Drive,
the Sara Schieman, Librarian
s o u t h e a s t corner of Yukon
Parkway and Highway 66. Free library services are available to Canadian County residents of all ages.
As long ago as 1905, Yukon’s citizens
knew they wanted and needed a public library. Twelve ladies, known as the Franklin Reading Circle, each purchased two books and began to circulate the books throughout the community. Shortly thereafter, the group expanded into an incorporated club, the Ladies Library Club. The women worked diligently to fi nancially support the library but realized in 1979 they could not make enough money to pay library employees, buy new books and supplies and have the library grow. At that time negotiations began for the City of Yukon to assume governance of the library. After being located in several old houses and a former bank building, in 1997, the library moved to its current, open and inviting, location on Lakeshore Drive.
The library offers print, audio and
video collections for patrons of all ages. The library also has large-print materials and offers a wide range of magazines and newspapers. In the fall of 2011, the library began offering eBooks, through the Oklahoma Virtual Library consortium. With over 9,000 titles in the shared collection, Yukon residents have access to a wide range of both print and audio titles to check out on their personal electronic devices. Homebound book delivery service is also available.
In addition, the library offers six public
access computers with internet access and printing capabilities which are accessed with a library card; and free wireless internet

connection. Public copy and fax services are available for a small fee. Thanks to funding from the Ladies Library Club, the library has added four new databases; Chilton Library, Career Transitions, Testing & Education Reference Center and Legal Forms. All are available in-house or remotely with a password.
Programs are readily available for
patrons of all ages. Children under age three can come to a weekly lap time program. For preschool children, the library offers a weekly preschool story time. The library also offers regularly scheduled programs for school-aged children, teens and adults, including a summer reading program.
Individual library cards are available,
at no charge, to all Canadian County residents in Kindergarten and older. Families living outside Canadian County may obtain a library card for a ten dollar annual fee. To apply for a card, patrons simply need to bring proof of residence and photo ID; parents or legal guardians must be present to issue library cards to minors.
