Stingray makes waves

MURPHYS Waves, the UK-based manufacturer of wave machine generators, has successfully installed its new Stingray half pipe attraction at Manhatton City Park, Kansas, US. Stingray is a brand new concept

that offers the world’s first surfing/skim-boarding half pipe experience. For the first time ever, it is possible for riders to surf up curved sidewalls at 90 degrees to the direction of the water flow. For general waterpark use,

Stingray can function in a lower power setting to give a thrilling

body boarding experience. For more experienced groups or competitions it can be used with Murphys Waves’ specially designed skim boards, allowing riders to stand up and carve high onto the curved side walls. “Having identified that rival products are often very

costly, have very restrictive conditions of sale and on-going usage and also are quite limited in terms of performance, we decided to design and develop a flow wave ride that would have the widest possible appeal to users and bring it to market at a very affordable price,” explained director Douglas Murphy.

New mega-resort planned for Middle East

AS new leisure developments across the Middle East continue to help cement the region’s reputation as a global hub for the attractions industry, three companies have signed a partnership that will see the development of a QAR6bn (US$1.6bn) integrated resort in Doha, Qatar. In September, Al-Futtaim Group, Qatar Islamic Bank

and Aqar Real Estate Investment signed a joint venture agreement to construct a state-of-the-art entertainment and retail complex in the Qatari capital. The state’s largest multi-purpose complex will be located on the northern highway linking Doha International Airport with the proposed Bahrain Causeway.

According to the consortium, the 433,000 sq. m complex

will become a driving force behind Qatar’s diverse economic development. The first retail phase is slated for completion in 2012 and the remaining two phases - which will see the construction of hotels and an entertainment centre with waterslides and roller coasters - will be completed by 2015. Robert Willett, group chief executive officer for Al-

Futtaim, said the project will transform the leisure, retail and entertainment industry in Doha, while providing visitors with a very attractive destination. “Our involvement symbolises Al-Futtaim’s desire to

remain innovative across all markets,” he said. “Al- Futtaim brings not just its fine construction and real estate development skills to this wonderful project, but also its enduring vision to enhance customer experiences.”

MTE heads to Cityscape Global 2010

MTE Studios, a consultancy firm specialising in themed architecture and interactive exhibitions, played a key role at Cityscape Global 2010, which ran from October 4-7 at the Dubai World Trade Centre, UAE. Confident in the regional property market,

MTE said it was geared to strengthen its project management and consultancy position by leveraging on the presence of potential partners and clients at the event. “Our architectural and artistic ability

enables us to translate the vision of our clients into inspiring and tangible architectural concepts and storyboards, followed by design development, detail design, method statements, tender documentation, project management and art direction during construction,” said CEO Ludo Verheyen.
